I thought I could hear the shower on, but then again it could have been the waterfall.
I headed into the bathroom. I took one step in and froze. I couldnât believe my eyes. On the mirror there was more writing... in blood, and then a body in the bathtub. Water was rushing over it from the shower. I didnât stay long enough to read what the writing said or to see who was slumped in the bathtub. I rushed out so quickly I tripped over my own feet.
âGo and get Mistress Halsente and Sir Mallotâ I screamed to Gabby.
âWhat? What is it?â she asked rushing to me.
I couldnât speak another word so I just pointed. She took one look and then slammed the door shut. She turned to face me in a way I didnât expected, she gave me a look of apology than worry. She didnât say a word she rushed out of the room leaving me there. I had to know why she looked at me like that. I headed to the door, and turned the door handle. I opened the door. It was the body that left me speechless.
Alison.
She looked dead-like. I couldnât help but rush to her but as soon as I felt her skin a shock rushed through me. I withdrew. She was ice cold. I tried to turn off the shower but the tap was stuck. There was no blood on her or bruises or cuts. At least that was something! She was wearing her favourite dress â the dress she wore for her first date with one of her boyfriends. Her hair covered her face. Being careful not to touch her skin I moved her hair. Her eyes were shut, almost like she was asleep. I couldnât help it. I broke down crying leaning on the side of the tub for support.
Seconds later I heard somebody move behind me. I turned to see if Gabby had returned with help. It was Gabby, but she wasnât alone. She was being held with a knife to her neck by a man. I had never seen this person before. He held the blade to Gabby with one arm and the box with the other.
âOpen itâ He said throwing the box in my direction. It skimmed my head and hit the wall behind with a thud.
I looked towards the box and then to Gabby. She had tears in her eyes, she was scared, but she shook her head - I wasnât to open the box.
âOpen it or they both dieâ said the man holding the knife even closer to Gabbyâs throat.
âMistress Halsente I need your help. Please, come quicklyâ It was the only thing I could think of.
âIâm on my wayâ I heard her voice in my head.
âWho are you?â I asked him â starting in a whisper but gradually getting louder.
âNever mind who I am. Just OPEN THE BOX!â He replied, screaming the last part.
âBut it could kill all of us. We donât know what will happen if I open it before I am sixteenâ I replied trying to buy us more time.
âI said OPEN ITâ He screamed in my face.
I looked towards Gabby for a bit of support. She just looked me in the eye through her tears. She thought I was going to let him kill her.
âOk.â I replied.
âNo...â screamed Gabby, but as soon as she started the man slapped his hand to her mouth.
âShut it, short pieâ He replied.
âI will open it, only if you let her go first.â I said.
âHow will I know you will open it?â he asked me, finding holes in my plan.
âYou have my wordâ I replied.
âFineâ he said shoving Gabby towards me.
âNow the boxâ he said.
I knelt down in front of the box. Gabby grabbed me as if to pull me back.
âNo. Charlie you mustnâtâ she pleaded.
âI gave my word, Gabbyâ I said, wiggling out of her grip.
âAre you near? I canât stall for much longerâ
âJust a few more secondsâ
I pulled my sleeve over my hand and turned the box to face me. The man drew closer to us. He had his legs bear. I lifted the box by the handle. I placed my bare hands over the buckle. I could feel a burning sensation in my fingers. The man was within armsâ reach now. I grabbed the box and swung it at his bare legs. The box crashed into him, forcing him to topple to the ground. He had frozen solid.
âWhat..?â Gabby started. I knew what she was going to ask so I answered her âThe box freezes anybody who touches it with bare skin that isnât me.â
âYou were planning that all along werenât you?â Gabby asked me.
I looked up to her and nodded.
She rushed to me and hugged me.
âBut what about your word?â she asked.
âIt only counts if you shake on itâ I replied almost cheerful.
Just then we heard a high pitched scream from behind us. Alison had awoken. I rushed to her and gave a her a huge hug.
âWhat happened?â she asked me âWhere am I?â
âSomebody kidnapped you and brought you here to scare meâ I replied to her so fast I surprised she caught it. I hugged her again, just relieved that she was alright.
âGabby, get a towelâ I said to Gabby.
Alison looked to the man on the floor. She gave out a little whimper. âI rememberâ She whispered.
Gabby handed me a towel and I wrapped it around Alison, helping her out of the bathtub while I was at it.
Just then Mistress Halsente ran in the room followed by Jeff and Sir Mallot. They saw the man first. Then us, then the box and then the writing on the mirror. I had forgotten about the writing on the mirror, curiosity flooded through me.
You will fail AND THEN YOU WILL DIE
Jeff rushed to my side and hugged me.
âAre you alright?â he asked me.
âIâm fineâ I replied.
Jeff looked towards Alison, a little shocked. He looked towards me.
âHe used her as bait. He knew I would stay with herâ I explained.
âAre you ok Alison?â Jeff asked.
Alison just nodded.
âAlison?â asked Mistress Halsente.
âMy best friend from my old school.â I replied.
âI should have know she would try and use Alison as baitâ said Jeff to Mistress Halsente.
âShe would be safer here as well Jeffâ said Sir Mallot.
âBut what about her family?â I asked him.
âJeff, do her parents know you well?â asked Sir Mallot to Jeff.
âYesâ he replied.
âGo and bring them here. They would only need to bring essentials. The rest we can provide.â Ordered Sir Mallot.
âI will leave immediately, Sir Mallotâ replied Jeff heading out.
âGabby, Hazel, will you sort Alison here out some nice clothes?â asked Sir Mallot.
âSir Mallot, could she share the room with me and Charlie. It might help the adjustmentâ suggested Gabby.
âI suppose soâ Sir Mallot replied.
âYou would have to have a bunk bed though. I cannot extend the room any further.â Commented Mistress Halsente.
âAlison and I will share the bunk bedâ I spoke up.
âVery well. Come on child. Letâs get you out of these wet clothes.â Said Mistress Halsente as she and Gabby helped Alison to her feet and out of the bathroom.
Sir Mallot looked towards the man on the floor. Frozen on the spot. He looked towards me.
âCharlie, I am going to get your guards to carry him to the holding cell. When I need you I will call for you but I will need you to... well...â he started but I knew what he was going to say âUnfreeze himâ
âYesâ He nodded âYou did wellâ
âThank you Sir.â I replied.
âCome onâ Said Sir Mallot âI want you to vanish for a hour or two while we sort this out.â
âIâll go and see Brad in the training roomâ I said as we both stood.
âI will tell Gabby to join you with Alisonâ he replied as we walked out to the main room. âGood day, Charlieâ
I headed out, and to the training room.
When I walked in, Brad was in the magic room â a glass box where Warlocks and Wiccans can challenge each other in â with Billy. He was mid way through a battle. I walked to the side and watched as one of his spells went storming towards Billy. Billy was forced back and when he sat back up, he held his hand to his head. I could hear him say something. Brad turned to walk out when he spotted me. He smiled and waved. I gave a very small smile and a small wave. He could by my lack of enthusiasm that something was wrong. He rushed out and to me.
âAre you alright?â He asked me.
âIâm fineâ I replied extremely quiet.
âNo youâre not, you can tell me. Whatâs wrong?â He asked.
I explained to him everything, but when I had finished I just broke down crying, âAnything could happened to Gabby and Alisonâ
He wrapped his arms around me. I lay my head on his shoulder but almost straight away he placed his hand under my chin and move my face so I was looking him in the eye.
âItâs going to be alrightâ he said quietly.
He whipped the tears from my face and then gently touched my lips with his. His kiss as soft as a feather. He pulled back, but I grabbed his face and pulled it towards me. The kiss became aggressive.
When suddenly there was a loud clearing of the throat.
Gabby had come down with Alison. I backed away from Brad.
âI see you got over what just happened pretty quicklyâ commented Gabby.
I went to reply when Brad spoke up, âSorry, thatâll be my fault.â
âJust kiddingâ laughed Gabby.
âGabby!â I shouted giving her a small punch on the shoulder.
âWhoâs your new friend?â asked Brad nodding towards Alison.
âI told you about Alisonâ I said kissing his cheek.
âOf courseâ replied Brad.
âAlison, this is Bradâ I said introducing him to her.
âCan I talk to you for a moment, Charlie?â asked Alison.
I nodded and followed Alison to a corner.
âI see you... how do we put it?... pulledâ she giggled.
âI know. And a good one tooâ I giggled, my mind back to when we were in primary school.
âListen, Mistress Halsente told me where I am and what you are and what is happening. But how come you didnât tell me?â she asked me turning serious.
âI didnât know. If I did they said I would have been in more danger while I was still out there and apparently now while Iâm in hereâ I replied.
âCHARLIE!â a shout came from across the room. It made both me and Alison jump out of our skin. It was Sir Mallot.
âI got to go. Iâll be back here soon, alright?â I asked her.
âYehâ she nodded and headed back to Gabby.
Sir Mallot lead me to the holding room where the man was still frozen. The holding room was dark with one single light that was swinging forwards and backwards. Cold mould was dripping down the walls. One pipe ran along one inch from the floor. It ran from one side of the door, around the room and to the other side of the room. The man was tied to the pipe by his left hand and
