Chapter 1
âHey, Derrick,â said Ashanti. Ashanti has long dark brown hair and fairly tan skin, with pale green eyes. Sheâs not the tallest girl at school; sheâs only 5 feet tall. Derrick on the other hand has slightly darker skin than Ashanti and is taller than her coming to about 6 ft. tall. He has short, slightly curly jet black hair. They have been friends for two years. Theyâre both juniors at Trinity High in Miami, Florida. Derrick is on the football team and Ashanti is head cheerleader. She has had a crush on Derrick since freshman year but wonât tell him out of fear that he doesnât feel the same. But what she doesnât know is that Derrick does in fact like her. He looked her up and down and finally said âWhatâs up Ash?â She replied âNothing much so how was your summer?â âIt was kind of boring.â Derrick said. Ashanti lightly put her hand on his arm which made him pause. She said âAww. You poor thing.â They both laughed at her attempt at baby talk. When they finally calmed down Ashanti asked âWhat class do you have first period?â Derrick looked at his schedule and said âI have gym. Did you hear that we have a game against the Eagles next Friday? Weâve only been in school one week, and theyâre already trying to make up play against the 3rd best football team in high school history.â Ashanti laughed at this and said âI think youâre over exaggerating a little bit, but yea I did hear about that, and for the next few days the football players and cheerleaders have to wear their uniforms to gym class and practice.â Derrick didnât say anything. All he could do was think about how beautiful he thought Ashanti was. When the first bell rang, Ashanti grabbed Derrickâs hand pulling him toward the gym while saying âCâmon, I donât wanna be late.â When they reached the gym, they went their separate ways. Derrick walked toward the boysâ locker room and Ashanti walked to the girls. The football team uniform: red and blue jersey and blue shorts. Derrick had the number â16â under his last name, Wells, on the back of his jersey. The cheerleadersâ uniforms: also red and blue. The skirts were blue with red trim on the bottom. The tops came just above their bellybuttons and had the word âLIONSâ printed across them in white, block letters. Derrick came out before Ashanti and decided to wait for her by the locker room door. When she came out, she tripped. Luckily Derrick was right there and caught her. His left hand ended up on her back and his right hand on her side. Derrick asked, âYou Okay Ash?â trying not to sound nervous or stutter her words but failing miserably, she said âY-Yeah, Iâm-Iâm fine.â Derrick realized the way her voice sounded and knew she was nervous, hell he was nervous too. They looked into each others eyes. All Derrick was thinking was: Man, I want to kiss her. So he tried. But when he leaned down to kiss her, Ashanti got scared. âUm, maybe we should get to class.â Derrick let her go and got to class. After a few more classes, school was finally over. Ashanti and Derrick lived across the street from each other a few blocks from the school. They decided to go to Derrickâs house to watch a few movies. Since it was Friday, they didnât have a curfew so Ashanti could be home whenever she wanted but decided not to stay out too late. When they were two blocks from Derrickâs house, Ashanti called her mom, Tricia, âHey mom, Iâm goinâ over to Derrickâs house. Iâll be home at 10.â ââKay hun, just donât be late.â ââKay mom love you bye.â She hung up her phone and started walking again. After a few minutes of silence Ashanti couldnât take it anymore, she decided to just tell Derrick the truth to get the weight off of her shoulders. If he felt the same way thatâs great, but then she started thinking: What if he doesnât? Iâd be so embarrassed and that would ruin our friendship. Derrick noticed her hesitation and the worried expression on her face. He stood in front of her and asked, âWhatâs wrong Ash?â She looked away from him and simply said, âNothing.â Her reply was so soft that Derrick would have missed it if he werenât standing so close. He softly said âAsh--â She interrupted him and said âJust drop it, Derrick.â She stepped around him and started walking again leaving him behind. He did what she wanted and dropped it for the time being. He turned and jogged to catch up with her. They continued walking to his house.
Chapter 2
ONCE THEY GOT TO DERRICK'S HOUSE THEY WENT TO HIS ROOM. THEY SAT ON HIS BED AND WATCHED A FEW SCARY MOVIES. DERRICK WAS LYING ON HIS BACK WITH HIS ARM ELEVATING HIS HEAD. ASHANTI WAS LYING BESIDE HIM, WITH HER ARM WRAPPED AROUND HIS STOMACH, HER HEAD RESTING ON HIS CHEST. WHENEVER A SCARY PART CAME UP, SHE WOULD TURN HER HEAD SO HER EYES WERE COVERD. HE CHUCKLED AND ASKED "ARE YOU OK?" ASHANTI REPLIED "YEAH IM FINE. I JUST DONâT LIKE SCARY MOVIES ALL THAT MUCH." SO DERRICK TURNED THE MOVIE OFF AND STARTED TO TICKLE HER TO MAKE HER FEEL BETTER. THEY BOTH STARTED LAUGHING. WHEN THEY SOBERED FROM ALL THE LAUGHTER, SHE LOOKED HIM IN HIS BROWN EYES AND BEFORE SHE COULD STOP THE WORDS FROM SLIPPING OUT SHE SAID, âI LOVE YOU.â WHEN SHE SAW THE LOOK ON HIS FACE, SHE FELT EMBARRASED. SHE WIGGLED FROM UNDER HIM AND GOT OFF THE BED AND TURNED HER BACK TO DERRICK. THEN, IN A SHAKY VOICE, SHE SAID âIâM SORRY. I NEVER SHOULD HAVE SAID THAT.â SHE HEARED HIM GET OFF OF THE BED AND SUDDENLY SHE FELT HIS ARMS GO AROUND HER WAIST. SHE TENSED UP BUT THEN SHE RELAXED AGAINST HIM. DERRICK TURNED HER IN HIS ARMS. SHE WOULDNâT LOOK AT HIM BECAUSE SHE WAS AFRAID HE WOULD SEE THE FEAR IN HER EYES. DERRICK LIFTED HER CHIN WITH HIS FINGER SO SHE WOULD LOOK AT HIM. HER PALE GREEN EYES WERE SHINING BECAUSE OF ALL THE CRYING. DERRICK LEANED IN TO KISS HER AND HER BREATH CAUGHT. BEFORE DERRICK COULD TOUCH HIS LIPS TO HERS, ASHANTIâS PHONE VIBRATED. SHE LOOKED AT THE NUMBER IN CONFUSION. SHE HESITATED FOR A MOMENT, THEN DECIDED TO ANSWER THE CALL. SHE HEARD A GUYâS VOICE AT THE OTHER END, BUT DIDNâT RECOGNIZE IT. HE SAID, "HEY HOT STUFF. HOW YOU DOINâ?" THE VOICE SOUNDED LIKE A DEEP WHISPER. SHE WAS SCARED BECAUSE SHE DIDNâT KNOW WHO IT WAS. SHE REPLIED IN A FRANTIC VOICE, "WHO IS THIS? HOWâD YOU GET THIS NUMBER?" THEN SHE FROZE BECAUSE SHE HEARD THE NAME, THE NAME THAT SENT A CHILL DOWN HER SPINE, âDRAKE.â THEN ALL SHE HEARD WAS BREATHING AT THE OTHER END AND A SUDDEN CLICK. SHE QUICKLY CLOSED HER PHONE AND THREW IT ON THE BED AND KEPT STARING AT IT. DERRICK LOOKED AT HER AND ASKED "ARE YOU OKAY? WHO WAS THAT?" SHE QUICKLY TURNED AROUND AND JUS STARED AT HIM, ANGER FLASHING IN HER EYES "DONâT YOU THINK IF I KNEW WHO IT WAS, I WOULDNâT HAVE ASKED?!?!â DERRICK JUST STOOD THERE AND STARED AT HER. HE WAS SHOCKED AT HER OUTBURST. WHEN HE DIDNâT SAY ANYTHIN SHE WHISPERD, âI HAVE TO GO.â SHE HEADED FOR THE DOOR AND DIDNâT STOP WHEN SHE HEARD DERRICKâS VOICE. HE STARTED âWAI--â BUT BEFORE HE COULD SAY WHAT HE WANTED SHE WAS OUT THE DOOR. DERRICK WAS STILL STUNNED AT WHAT SHE SAID. SHE WAS USUALLY CALM AND NEVER YELLED AT ANYONE. HE SNAPPED OUT OF HIS DAZE WHEN HE HEARD THE FRONT DOOR SLAM. THINKING FAST, DERRICK GRABBED HIS JACKET AND RUSHED OUT THE DOOR TO CATCH UP WITH THE GIRL HE LOVES.
Chapter 3
AFTER ASHANTI LEFT DERRICKâS HOUSE SHE DECIDED NOT TO GO HOME. SHE DIDNâT HAVE TO BE HOME âTILL 10 AND IT WAS ONLY 7: 30. SINCE IT WAS AFTER SCHOOL HOURS SHE DECIDED TO GO TO THE SCHOOLâS FOOTBALL FEILD SO SHE COULD THINK ABOUT WHAT JUST HAPPENED WITH DERRICK. WHEN SHE GOT THERE SHE SAT ON THE BLEACHERS. ALL KINDS OF NEGATIVE THOUGHTS CROSSED ASHANTIâS MIND BUT ONE THING CAME LOUDER AND CLEARER THAN ANYTHING ELSE: WHY WOULD YOU TELL HIM YOU LOVE HIM ASHANTI?!? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?! OF ALL THE OTHER THINGS YOU COULD HAVE SAID YOU SAY THAT!?! STUPID!!! STUPID!!! SSTUUPIID!!! SUDDENLY SHE HEARD FOOTSTEPS AND HOPED IT WASNâT WHO SHE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE, BUT IT WAS. DERRICK. THEY STARED AT EACH OTHER BEFORE HE CAME TO SIT WITH HER. THEY SAT IN SILENCE FOR WHAT FELT LIKE FOREVER TO ASHANTI. FINALLY DERRICK BROKE THE SILENCE. âASH, I--â HE STARTED BUT WAS INTERUPTED, âNO, DERRICK, DONâT TELL ME. I KNOW WHAT YOUâRE GONNA SAY. YOUâRE GONNA TELL ME THAT YOU DONâT FEEL THAT WAY ABOUT ME. YOUâRE GONNA SAY THAT WE SHOULD JUST BE FRIENDS. IâVE HAD MY HEART BROKEN BEFORE; I DONâT NEED IT BROKEN AGAIN.â WITH THAT SAID SHE GOT UP AND TRIED TO WALK AWAY ONLY TO FEEL DERRICKâS HAND CATCH HER WRIST. SHE CLOSED HER EYES AND SAID IN A WHISPER âDERRICK, PLEASE DONâT DO THIS.â HE GOT UP AND STOOD INFRONT OF HER AND SAID, âASH LOOK AT ME.â HESITANTLY SHE LOOKED AT HIM. HE CONTINUED, âJUST BECAUSE YOUâVE HAD YOUR HEART BROKEN BY OTHER GUYS, DOESNâT MEAN IâLL DO THE SAME. IâD BE LYING IF I SAID THAT I DIDNâT LOVE YOU. I LOVE HAVING YOU AS A FRIEND BUT IâVE HAD FEELINGS FOR YOU FOR TWO YEARS. I LOVE YOU ASHANTI AND I WOULD NEVER HURT YOU.â BY THE TIME HE GOT HIS FEELINGS OUT, ASHANTI WAS CRYING. DERRICK WIPED THE TEARS FROM HER EYES. ALL SHE COULD SAY WAS, âDERRICK IM SO SORRY I DONâT KNOW WHATâS WRONG WITH ME. ONE MINUTE IM PERFECTLY FINE, THEN THE NEXT I JUST GET SO MAD. IâM SORRY.â DERRICK PUT HIS ARMS AROUND HER AND INSTINCTIVELY ASHANTI PUT HER ARMS AROUND DERRICKâS NECK. DERRICK SAID, âITâS OKAY. DONâT CRY, I HATE SEEING YOU LIKE THIS.â BUT IT WASNâT OKAY. THERE WAS SOMETHING DERRICK DIDNâT KNOW ABOUT ASHANTI, NOT EVEN ASHANTI KNOW THIS HERSELFâŠ.NOT YET ANYWAY. WHAT THEY DIDNâT KNO IS THAT ASHANTI ISâŠ
A FLEDGLING. A YOUNG VAMPIRE.

WHEN ASHANTI GOT HOME THAT NIGHT, SHE HAD A HUGE GOOFY GRIN ON HER FACE. HER MOM WAS IN THE LIVINGROOM WATCHING NCIS. WHEN SHE HEARD THE DOOR CLOSE, SHE TURNED AND SAW HER DAUGHTER STANDING THERE LOOKING GIDDY. âWHATâS GOT YOU ON CLOUD NINE?â ASHANTIâS SMILE JUST GREW BIGGER WHEN SHE FINALLY SAID IN A SING SONG VOICE, âOH, NOTHING. ITâS JUST A BEAUTIFUL DAY. THE FLOWERS ARE BLOOMING, THE STARS ARE SHINING BRIGHT!â WHEN TRICIA DIDNâT SAY ANYTHING MORE, ASHANTI WENT UP TO HER ROOM. AFTER SHE GOT HER PAJAMAS ON, SHE SAW THAT SHE HAD A TEXT FROM DERRICK. SHE OPENED AND READ IT: HEYY, BEAUTIFUL. U WANNA HNG OUT 2MORROW? SHE QUICKLY REPLIED BACK: SURE, THT SNDS GR8. WHEN HE DIDNâT TEXT BACK, SHE REALIZED HOW TIRED SHE WAS. SHE GLANCED OVER AT HER ALARM CLOCK AND SAW THAT IT WAS ONLY 9:50. SHE YAWNED, PUT HER PHONE ON HER BEDSIDE TABLE AND WENT TO SLEEP. THAT DIDNâT LAST LONG BECAUSE AT 11:00 SHE WOKE UP WITH A SEARING PAIN IN HER SKULL AND GUMS. THE PAIN WAS SO INTENCE THAT ALL SHE COULD DO WAS
