LOVE TEACHES LESSONS THAT WE LEARN BY LIVING
I have said all I can say, all I have to say
To you and to me
I have been all I can be, for you and for me
I have seen yesterday, and pictured tomorrow
As I wade through the day
I have highlighted my faults, resolved to fix them
Accepted your own and promised to share them
We each can be more and will be
Hopefully as one with wiser versions of you and me
After this tide of emotion ebbs
After the darkness and ugliness is spent
We know where we went wrong and appreciate why we did
I am back to understanding your tick
As you get in step with my tock
You are afraid of me I know, and won’t let go
Of the pain and the hurt and the walking away
That I did, that both of us did
It is still too fresh in your mind what I did not do
And what you now cannot
The threat to the heart is still too real
The destruction of the mind is beyond imagining
You look at me and probably wonder
How I can seem the man you remember and not care
That opening up to you could be my deepest source of grief
But that is not it; nothing could be further from it
I walk around like Damocles, with heat just beyond my heart
A heat that can both sear and rear
One that can be a threat of violence
Or a promise of nurturing
It’s not that I am not as fretful as you are
Or even as reluctant to let all the way go
It’s that I believe that it is darkest before the dawn
It’s that I know that after the storm we have been through
Comes the calm in which we now get by through
But more than anything
More than hope and fear
More than pain and dreams
I know that what we are moving into now
If ever we allow ourselves the chance to
Is bigger, brighter, better, bolder and more beautiful
Than anything we could have ever asked or imagine
I BELIEVE IN YOU AND ME.
