She opened her eyes and lifted her head. Moto's eyes were closed, and he was breathing in a way that seemed to indicate that he was sleeping, but one never knew. Her eyes roamed freely over his body, at least the parts that weren't under the blanket. She loved how smooth his skin was to her touch, she loved the firmness of his muscles, there wasn't a flabby spot anywhere on his body. She loved the way his scent permeated her being and warmed her center, she loved the way he aroused her, he woke something so primal inside of her that sometimes it scared her, and at the same time she knew there would never be anyone else for her. He filled an empty place inside her that she didn't realize was empty.
She reached up to brush a stray braid from his face but stopped midair and laid her hand on his chest. She could feel the heat of his body penetrating hers. Every night he gathered her into his arms and held her close, protectively throughout the night. She didn't know how he slept with her laying half on him the whole night, and how her dreams didn't disturb him. They were so connected; how could he not feel the dreams? She didn't know. It had been so long since they had been able to communicate telepathically, and she didn't know why he kept his mind so closed to her.
She traced patterns on his chest and inched down towards his abdomen where the blanket did not cover him. She knew that he was naked under the blanket as he was every night. She opted for a light sleeping gown that Sari packed. She knew that he had been disappointed when she came to the sleeping pallets dressed, but he refrained from comment. She didn't have to touch his mind, not that he would let her, to know he was disappointed. She could see it all over his facial expression. At least he didn't hide behind his stone, emotionless mask that he wore when he was among his people. He gave her that much during their time in the cave.
She sighed.
Moto opened his eyes and her gaze gravitated to lock with his. He reached up and brushed her hair from her face. "Why so sad this morning, little one?"
She sat up and looked away. His hand dropped to his side. She didn't even know where to begin. She was sad, but she was also so much more. There were a multitude of other emotions floating around inside her that she couldn't put to words what was bothering her, everything, nothing, somewhere in between. She knew that he would want to fix it. How could he fix it when she didn't know what it was that caused her such turmoil inside? At least, not one specific thing that she could point to and say 'fix' that. It would have been so much easier if she could just show him in her mind. Why had he closed his mind to her?
"Look at me, Kaily!"
She turned her gaze to meet his. "I don't know where to begin." She wanted to tell him about her dreams, but the words lodged in her throat. She didn't want to think about them, let alone talk about them.
He glanced away towards the fire and table. "Did you mean what you said yesterday about wanting to be treated as if you were Kahoali?" His gazed settled on her.
Her heart skipped a beat. There was something in his tone that made her reluctant to answer his question. "Why?" She asked, frowning.
"Just answer the question, Kaily." His tone was full of frustration.
"Yes," She hesitantly said.
He moved to kneel in front of her. He placed his forehead against hers and held her head between both his hands. "I want to take you as my bonded mate."
Her eyes drifted to the view between his legs, his desire evident. She closed her eyes and her heart skipped another beat. "I would like that."
He raised his head and dropped his hands to her shoulders.
Her gazed again locked with his. His hands on her shoulders were gentle, but there was something in his eyes that she couldn't decipher. She wished she could touch his mind. It felt like there was something wrong, but wasn't this a good thing, bonding with her? "What is it?"
He took a deep breath. "I need to know that you understand what being my bonded mate would mean."
She opened her mouth to reply. He laid a finger across her lips, silencing her protest.
He placed a chaste light kiss on her lips where his finger had been. "I need to know that you will accept the Kahoali way," he paused, "my way." He said with emphasis.
"I do." She touched his cheek. "I do. I want this as much as you do. I may not know everything I need to know, but I trust what we have and that is enough to get through the rest."
He laughed. There was no amusement in his laughter. "I hope so. I really hope so." He pulled her close.
She melted into his arms and gave way to his possession of her mouth as his tongue slipped in and out, coaxing her tongue to dance with his. The heat between them rose to the surface. She felt moisture pooling between her legs. She wrapped her arms around his neck and attempted to pull him closer to her. She wanted to lay back and give him whatever he wanted. Instead, he lightened the kiss and began pulling back. She searched his eyes for answers. She would have preferred searching his mind for answers but couldn't.
He took another deep breath. She was held captive by his intense gaze. "In the way of the Kahoali, I demand retribution for the offense against me."
Kaily's heart sank and began beating. "What?"
