from cube to cube, shooting at each other or clashing hand-to-hand at every opportunity. Hade and Boltus might have been able to lose themselves in the action if not for the constant gloating from Nemisys every time a white Aught warrior killed a single black Naught, or took possession of a single additional 1-meter Battle Cube.

“Oh my,” Nemisys snickered with ruthless glee. “Another cube goes to the Aughts.”

“Black is going to win!” Hade said decisively. “Naughts have the advantage! A single small cube makes no difference!”

“I wouldn’t be so sure, Hade!” Nemisys called out from the roof of his crowded Hover Cube where the cybernetic carnality had reached an orgasmic crescendo of its own. The only ones still watching the match from atop his extravagant cube were Synnestra and Nemisys himself. “It’s still early in the campaign!”

“Black will win!” Hade grunted. “Naughts have more Battle Cubes! They are better positioned! They have momentum! They. Will! Win! And soon!”

“We shall see,” Nemisys chortled.

After several more hours of savage combat, the ratio of Battle Cubes occupied by the Naughts had swelled to an impressive 66%, most of them surrounding the main Fortress Cube of the Aughts, who only held their fortress cube, which accounted for a meager 10% of all Battle Cubes.

When the Aughts’ white Fortress Cube flickered briefly black for the first time, a metallic cheer ripped across every spectator watching.

“Naughts have breached the Aughts’ Fortress Cube!” Hade roared victoriously.

“Mmm,” Nemisys mumbled, hiding an irritated sneer by sipping his Kurkullan silicone.

“This is it,” Boltus Maximus growled with grinding delight. “The final standoff.” He revved his engines loudly and approvingly.

In short order, the frequency of flickering between white and black on the Aught’s Fortress Cube became an even, slow pulse, meaning 50% occupation of the Aught’s fortress by invading Naught warriors.

Despite appearances, the battle wasn’t over. Inside the huge cube, combat continued as the Naughts fought their way tenaciously inward toward the presumed location of the Aughts’ Cube Core. Outside, small numbers of remaining Aughts scattered throughout the battle space continued to skirmish valiantly wherever they fought enemy Naughts. But the fractured Aught army was teetering on the brink of defeat.

“Our victory is assured,” Hade seethed with authoritative command, convinced the pending success of this battle was an omen of his upcoming success on Zalaxia. Hade could envision the moment when his dark mutant forces would lay siege to that bright bastion of feminine heaven, the Zalaxian jungle outpost where Hade himself would soon slay the pretender king and seize his Royal ring.

Nemisys snorted pompously, “The match isn’t over until every last Aught warrior is destroyed, or their Cube Core is destroyed. You know that, Hade.”

“Their defeat is inevitable and imminent,” Hade growled menacingly, glaring hatred at his former friend. It was as if Nemisys had just suggested Hade’s upcoming raid on the jungle outpost would fail.

Kuh-KOOM!

From the far side of Kill CUBE’s massive battle space, the Naught Fortress Cube suddenly ripped apart in a spectacular explosion that sent shrapnel and the smaller surrounding Battle Cubes shooting away and spinning in every direction. In addition, every Naught warrior throughout the battle space dropped dead where they stood or floated, their cybernetic heads sparking blackly. While the Naught fortress debris dissipated, every floating black Battle Cube turned gray or white — gray if there were no white Aught warriors on the cube, white if there were. More importantly, the Aughts’ Fortress Cube stopped flickering black and turned back to its original solid white.

“Not possible!” Hade barked, dumbfounded and instantly furious.

Nemisys chortled, “It appears some clever Aught found and destroyed the Naught’s black Cube Core. What do you think of that, Hade?”

“NO!” Hade roared, bucking back on his hind hooves. He slashed the air with his fore hooves. His plasma tail whipped in angry white arcs. “Naughts had the advantage! Their Fortress Cube was secure! They showed an overwhelming display of force!”

“Appearances can be deceiving, Hade,” Nemisys sniffed aloofly. “All it takes is one cleverly disguised saboteur to bring down an entire army or destroy the most fortified fortress.”

“No!”

“Yes, Hade,” Nemisys gloated.

“NO! There is no glory in clever disguises and skulking about!”

“Glory lies only in the arms of victory, my dear friend. Nowhere else. To claim otherwise is the delusion of the defeated.” Nemisys made a show of pulling Synnestra tightly into his arms. “Hade, you can deliver my ten Zalaxian Palace Concubines to my—”

“I’LL SHOW YOU DEFEATED!” Hade roared, ready to vault across the air gap between Hover Cubes and tear Nemisys apart with his cybernetic fists. Then he would stomp Nemisys’ sniveling chromium face into the ground with his titanium hooves.

“No,” Nemisys chortled, “You’ll show me ten Zalaxian Palace Concubines within the week or sign over ownership of your creator’s empire to Nemisys Imperius.”

Hade’s centanoid legs bunched up and tensed, ready to gallop and spring over and kill Nemisys.

Boltus’ centank engine roared and his continuous tracks clanked loudly as he charged Hade away from the edge of their Hover Cube and away from the proud gloating of Nemisys.

Looming over his creation, Boltus warned with quiet, seething fury, “You would do well to remember the words of Nemisys Imperius, creation, lest your pride precede your fall and mine.”

“What?!” Hade gasped incoherently, unwittingly cowering under the mighty glare of his much larger centank father.

Boltus continued quietly, “Victory by any means necessary, creation! There is no shame in honest trickery! You must succeed in taking the Zalaxian throne! Now you have no choice! Now it’s not just your cybernoid hide on the line with the likes of Baron Crewd von Bludlust! It’s my entire empire! Would you have it fall into the hands of Nemisys Imperius and his family because of your stubbornness?!”

“INCORPORARE IMPERIUS CAN ROT IN HELL!” Hade raged with a fearful, brittle edge to his normally authoritative voice. “I WILL LAY SIEGE TO THE ZALAXIAN OUTPOST WITH MY ARMY! I WILL WIN BY DEMONSTRATING THE GLORY OF PURE POWER! I WILL TAKE THE KING’S RING BY MAXIMUM FORCE! THERE IS NO OTHER WAY!”

“Isn’t
