She was so hot, the last thing on my mind was any thought of a spy or saboteur infiltrating the outpost like Lieutenant Dyna had accused Corporal Syx yesterday.
The only thing I could think about now was Mira.
Her beauty blocked out all other thought.
It wouldn’t be the first time an enemy used a beautiful woman to dazzle their victim to distract them — them being me — from whatever bad assassins might be waiting to stab me in the back while my eyes were glued to someone else’s front Mira’s front, for example.
If you think I’m an idiot for ignoring the obvious, to that I say simply, this outpost was wall-to-wall eye candy wherever I looked. Meaning, constant sexual distractions. That was the Achilles heel for a vigorous young man like me. More importantly, you couldn’t learn how to pilot a transformable mech if you spent all your time searching for spies, right?
Lastly, much like Odysseus had not stuffed his own ears full of wax when his ship had sailed past those sexy sirens, I hadn’t put blinders over my eyes here at the outpost. Someone had to keep an eye on things, Hot Young Things — and Pilots — in particular. It would likely lead to my downfall, but that was the price you paid for looking at bedazzling babes.
The way I saw it, if I was going to honor my commitment to make Oia my first here on Zalaxia in two weeks, I wasn’t going to stop myself from looking to my heart’s content until then.
In fact, if you were to rush up to me on this very landing deck and whisper in my ear that Mira was setting me up for an assassination attempt this morning, the only words I would hear you say would be “ass” and “in” and “me” in hers.
I kid you not.
I mean, look at her.
Look at her in her skintight pilot’s uniform. Her ass was the only thing I could think about. At some point in life, most people learned that every commitment required sacrifice, and in my case I was more than happy to sacrifice my sanity on the altar of Lieutenant Mira’s heavenly body.
I grinned at her. “Me? Run out on our bet yesterday? No way.”
“Admit it,” Mira smiled. “You thought you’d lose.”
“You wish,” I smirked. “Anyway, I’m here now.”
“You are. By the way, I heard what you did to Lieutenant Dyna.”
“What did you hear?” I said evenly, wondering if Mira would automatically side with another “Normal” like Dyna.
“I heard she got what she deserved,” Mira said sourly.
“I take it you aren’t Dyna’s number one fan?”
“Fan?” Mira frowned. “Like a cooling fan?”
It was the language barrier thing again. I said, “Fan, like fanatic. Don’t you have that word on Zalaxia?”
“I’ve heard it,” Mira said like maybe she hadn’t. “But hardly anyone ever says it.”
“Wait, don’t you have rockstars, celebrities, movie stars, famous athletes? That kind of thing?”
“What?” Mira giggled, slightly confused.
“Famous people you obsess over fanatically?”
“Famous, my king?”
“You know, someone who everyone else knows about. Someone all over media and the internet.”
“Internet?”
“Your global database,” I said, using a term I remembered Cygna using when she’d copied the Earth’s internet. “Someone everyone talks about and knows about. Someone always in the news. You have news, right?”
“Of course,” Mira snorted.
Finally we were on common ground. “Someone who’s in the news every day. That’s what I mean by famous.”
Mira sniffed, “The only famous person on Zalaxia is you, King Sekton Darkstar.”
“Huh?” I snorted. “Really?”
“Yes, really,” Mira smirked like I was the ignorant one.
How strange, I thought. I didn’t know where to begin. It would be an hours-long conversation. I sighed, “You know what? Forget about that. I take it you and Lieutenant Dyna aren’t best friends?”
“With that Conk?” Mira snuffed. “No.”
I smiled.
Mira was the first “Normal” I’d heard call another Normal a Conk. In my mind, that reflected well for Mira. It meant she was an independent thinker who didn’t follow the party line simply because everyone else like her was doing it too. It also made me want her ass — and the rest of her — that much more. Assassination attempts be damned.
Mira smiled brightly, “Ready to lose our bet?”
“Can I test out my mech first? Get a feel for it? Or do you want to do some more pre-gloating first?”
“Don’t let me stop you,” Mira laughed.
At that point, we both deployed our power armor and climbed up the rolling ladders into our Dragonfires. I settled into my cockpit seat and closed the hatch with a mental command. Deployed my helmet and visor, and mentally fired up the 360 degree 3D Visor View. My mech’s body was now visible in my peripheral vision while my own body was hidden by my helmet visor. The illusion of being the mech was complete.
Mira’s face appeared in a floating comms window. “Show me what you’ve got, my king…” she said suggestively.
I chuckled bashfully, “Okay, how about I run around the deck for a few minutes? Get a feel for how this thing moves?”
“Get a feel for how which thing moves?” she said with sexual intent.
“The mech,” I chuckled. “Get a feel for the mech.”
“Mine or yours?”
“Huh?” I could tell she was flirting but I wasn’t sure what she meant. It wasn’t like mechs could have sex with each other.
Mira shook her head dismissively because I wasn’t getting it. She instead said, “Take your rig for a test walk, my king. The deck is yours.”
My nerves were building by the second because I had no idea hot to pilot this thing. I told myself I’d be in my element once I started running around. Back home in the Rolbotics exosuit, ground game had been my thing. I should be able to transfer most of those skills to this battle rig, right? A successful test run — literally running and jumping in the Dragonfire — might help calm me down before it was time to bet the farm on a
