the fluorescently bright waiting room. She turned back to face Will, who slumped in one of the hard chairs lined up along the wall.

ā€œEven if it is a pyramid schemeā€”which itā€™s notā€”Iā€™m already in. Iā€™ve got to make this workā€”I need more money.ā€

Will tipped his head back and barked out a laugh. He crossed his arms tight, his white lab coat billowing out onto the seats beside him. ā€œYou and me both, sister. For the twentieth time, I canā€™t give you a raise.ā€

She threw her hands up, her nails brightly colored. ā€œThen donā€™t come at me for trying to better myself. If you canā€™t give me a raise, I have to be my own boss.ā€ She tossed her head, and her side pony flew over her shoulder.

I raised my brows. ā€œHi, guys.ā€ I gave an exaggerated circle wave. ā€œGreat to see you, too.ā€

They both spared me cursory glances and mumbled their hellos. I rolled my eyes and threw myself into a chair on the other side of the L shape from Will, a table strewn with outdated magazines and editions of The Conch between us.

ā€œAlright, what are you fighting about?ā€

ā€œIā€™m not fighting about anything.ā€ Willā€™s bushy brows were raised nearly to his hairline. ā€œIā€™m just trying to talk some sense into our young friend here.ā€

Heidi rolled her eyes. ā€œIā€™m not a child.ā€ She clicked her tongue and turned to face me. ā€œBesidesā€”if you two want me to act like an adult, then why are you throwing water over my deck? My friend Alayah wants me to get a place with her, and I am dying to move out of my parentsā€™ house, but how am I supposed to do that without any merkles?ā€ She threw her hands up again.

Will crossed his legs and frantically bounced his foot. ā€œCanā€™t help you, sister. Between what Iā€™m paying Ludolf for rent and ā€˜protectionā€™ā€ā€”he made air quotes with his long fingersā€”ā€œand what I pay you, I can barely afford to live myself.ā€

I sighed. ā€œI feel your pain, guys. With Peter ghosting me, everything Iā€™ve made from consulting has just about dried up. I donā€™t know what Iā€™m going to do when this job is over.ā€

Heidiā€™s expression softened, and she turned to me, lip curled. ā€œHeā€™s not over it, huh?ā€

I sank lower in my chair and shook my head.

ā€œSorry.ā€ She grimaced. ā€œMaybe heā€™ll come around?ā€

Will snorted. ā€œNot in my experience.ā€ He shot me a side-eye look. ā€œSorry,ā€ he added.

I nodded, then shot Heidi a half smile. ā€œNot everyoneā€™s as open-minded and sweet as you are.ā€

Her cheeks flushed pink, and she waved it off. ā€œI honestly donā€™t get the whole antishifter thing.ā€ She shrugged.

I gave her a small grin. ā€œYouā€™re one of the good ones, Heidi.ā€

She straightened and threw her shoulders back. ā€œThank you. And you know, my success is in my own two hands. With Potent Potions, I can make my own schedule and I decide how much money I makeā€”I just have to work tirelessly and not be afraid of sacrificing some hard work, time, and relationships.ā€ A little crease appeared between her brows as if even she wasnā€™t sure of her words.

Will cocked his head. ā€œDid they tell you that?ā€

ā€œWellā€¦ā€ Heidi shifted on her feet. ā€œYeah.ā€ She scrunched up her face. ā€œListen, what happened tonight, with Mama Pearl dead? Itā€™s got me shaken, too. Donā€™t tell anyone I said this, but Iā€™m starting to think using my entire savings to buy in might not have been a good idea.ā€

Will sucked in a mock gasp and pressed an enormous hand to his chest, eyes wide. ā€œNo!ā€

Heidi answered him with a flat look.

I cleared my throat. ā€œSoā€¦ the companyā€™s still going on, huh?ā€

ā€œEven though they cut off the head of the gorgon?ā€ Will chimed in.

Heidi nodded. ā€œMama Pearl wouldā€™ve wanted us to continue on with her legacy.ā€

ā€œThey told you to say that, too?ā€

She rolled her eyes but gave a grudging nod to Will, who chuckled. ā€œOh, this just gets better and better.ā€

She tossed her hair again. ā€œWhatever, Iā€™ve got all this inventory now that Iā€™ve got to sell to make my money back. The company better go on, or Iā€™ll lose everything.ā€ Her chest heaved. ā€œItā€™s fine, though.ā€

Will and I exchanged looks. Was it?

She nodded, and I couldnā€™t tell if she was trying to convince us more, or herself. ā€œSoon, Iā€™ll make all that back and then some, and I wonā€™t even need my night job anymore.ā€

Will lifted a brow.

ā€œWellā€”after a little while. My upline said the thing to do for the first few months is to keep reinvesting everything I make in more merchandise.ā€

I heaved a weary sigh. ā€œOf course they did.ā€ Poor girl. She didnā€™t get it yet, but she was not only an employee of Potent Potions, but their best customer. I suspected that no one bought more tiny vials of potions than their own consultantsā€”the definition of a pyramid scheme. But sheā€™d already put her life savings into it, and I hoped, for her sake, that sheā€™d be one of the few to walk away having at least broken even. Unfortunately, broke as I was, I couldnā€™t really help her with that.

Heidi spun to face me. ā€œSorry. Enough about me. Tell us what happened with Peter?ā€

Will nodded. ā€œAnd the case. Have you figured out who offed Mama Pearl?ā€ He smirked. ā€œWas it the pig?ā€

I smirked back. ā€œNah. I think the pigā€™s clean.ā€ I filled them in on Papa Ralph seeming like a slimy dude, one of the top sellers having a motive due to the recent policy change, and the slightly too-innocent-looking assistant.

I shrugged. ā€œAdd to that a sister who might have been tired of living in Pearlā€™s shadow, angry protestors, and literally thousands of employees who might all have been scammed by the company, and our problem is actually having too many suspects.ā€

Heidi dragged herself over and slumped into the chair next to me. ā€œThey changed the bonus structure? My upline didnā€™t tell me about that.ā€

I threw an arm around her. ā€œSorry, girl.ā€

She leaned her head against my shoulder. Looked
