Tala’s belly filled with butterflies at the sensual tone in Kain’s voice. Her thighs drew together at the growing wetness between her legs. She imagined what it would be like to have sex with Kain if hearing his voice drove her this crazy with desire.
“How did your time with Jillian go?” Kain asked, intrigued by the effect he had on Tala.
“It was fun. Nice to have some girl time.” She playfully shoved his chest. “Are you still wanting to go on our date?”
Kain nodded, excusing himself to go get cleaned up and dressed.
While he was gone, Tala hung up the new clothes Jill got her in Kain’s closet. She took the books she got and put them on the nightstand. One of them, she got for Kain as a gift since Jill told her he liked to read.
She set it on his bedside, wondering when he would notice it.
Kain returned freshly dressed, sat on the bed and proceeded to put his boots and jacket on. He took his keys from the nightstand, chuckling when he noticed the new book.
That didn’t take long, Tala thought, catching a teasing glance from Kain.
The two of them left the room to Kain’s waiting car in the driveway. Tala neglected to tell him where they were going so he waited on her cue.
“There.”
Tala pointed to a coffee shop Kain was all too familiar with. It was the place where Damien often stopped to get his favorite tea and talk with his friend Rob or his dad, Charlie.
Kain pulled the car into a parking spot and turned off the engine prior to getting out and opening Tala’s door for her.
Tala thanked him, giggling. When he offered his arm, Tala bypassed it and took his hand, tangling her fingers with his. It made Kain happy to see she accepted his advances. She pulled him through the door and up to the cash register.
Betsy McClaine, a fellow lycan froze, her wrinkled eyes widening when they fell on Kain. Her hands drew up to her mouth, hiding yellowed fangs.
“Here I swore I saw the last of them,” she said, her eyes misting. “I heard the rumors there was a Kain at the battle with Lilith. I didn’t believe them until now.”
Betsy kept the conversation within an ear shot of her daughter Rayna. The two lycans stared at Kain until Betsy handed him the drink he ordered.
Kain could feel their eyes on him as they left the shop. The look in Betsy’s eyes lingered in his mind. Her daughter wiped away a single tear from her eye, probably thinking she’d hidden it.
“I didn’t realize how important your family was until I came here,” Tala said, sitting down after Kain opened her door for her.
Kain sat down in the driver’s side, turning the key. The engine purred to life. “Reactions like that are not uncommon. Since I came to the States, I’ve been visited by many lycans. Most of them shocked to find a Kain still lived. Others needing guidance on what to do after discovering vampires lived here as well.”
The car pulled out of the lot onto the road. Tala directed Kain to a spot in the woods where he parked his car and the two got out to walk.
Tala asked multiple questions about the importance of Kain’s family and why so many lycans almost seemed to revere them. Kain told her the story of his father’s legacy. How he did more than just defend the royal line. He defended families who were trying to live during the Blood Wars, often leaving his charge to answer howling calls of help and desperation.
Pentacost’s sacrifice earned him the respect of the lycan race. A legacy Kain did his best to keep alive the best he could.
Tala took Kain to an old wooden bridge overlooking a bubbling creek overflowing from the abundance of rain. She sat on a wooden bench overlooking the scenery.
“I thought you’d like this place. It’s calm and quiet. A great place to talk or--” Tala paused, her cheeks hot.
Kain sat next to her, grinning at the not so subtle invitation. He lay his arm around Tala who snuggled into his chest with a satisfied sigh.
The two sat in silence, enjoying the fading light of the evening, stealing a kiss every now and then.
A foreign scent followed by the rustling of the leaves grabbed Kain’s attention.
Tala’s ears perked at the sound.
Kain stood up slowly, his eyes locked on a bush on the other side of the bridge.
“Tala, go towards the car.” Kain kept his voice low. He stalked towards the rustling brush, his nose focused on the scent. It didn’t smell like a werewolf or a vampire. However, he couldn’t make out the scent of a lycan either through the heavy scent of blood.
When he was sure Tala was a safe distance away, Kain quickened his pace, eventually leaping through the brush and landing on a large wolf, dragging it out of the brush.
The wolf whimpered against the wounds covering its body. Kain pinned it by the throat beneath his boot.
“Tobias!” Tala screamed. “Alex, stop! Please!”
Kain looked back to see Tala running towards them, annoyed she hadn’t listened but relieved to find she knew the wolf beneath his boot. He let the wolf up.
It shifted into the form of a young man covered in bruises and cuts. His breath heaved.
“Who is this?” Kain asked.
“He’s my brother.” Tala rolled Tobias onto her lap. “Tobias, by the gods, what happened?”
Tobias struggled to speak but was unable to.
Tala’s eyes filled with tears at the terrible state her brother was in. “We need to take him to the hospital. Please, Alex.”
Kain couldn’t help but feel a bit uneasy. The wounds covering the young lycan’s body were interrogation wounds.
Much like the ones he’d inflicted to get information in the Blood Wars. Despite his instinct, Kain helped Tala get Tobias in his car.
