âYou got night vision. Read me the inscription,â Hillerman says to me.
I press my face to the bars to get a clear view. âLooks like two parts. The first partâŠImperiumâŠImmortal?â
âImmortalis?â
âOkay, yeah. Imperium Immortalis.â
âAnd the second part?â
âEasier. Marco and Deus.â
âImperium Immortalis, Marco Deus?â
âThatâs it. Meaning?â
ââImmortal power, banner of the gods.ââ
âOh, is that all? Underachievers.â
âBasically.â Jay adds, âIt says âNecromancers wanted, apply within.ââ
Hillerman turns to Russo. âThat means you. Got that business card?â
He pulls it from his coat pocket. âThis gate, though. Unless somebody brought bolt cuttersâŠâ His voice trails off when the thick chains go slack, then fall from the bars. The gate swings open with a low, ominous creak.
Russo takes a deep breath. âAfter you guys.â
âThe card was given to you, Detective Russo. Only you.â
âTough titties,â I say. âWeâre not letting him go in alone, are you kidding? You. Youâre the demon expert. Youâre going in with him.â
âOut of the question. Youâve seen how demons react to me. I hardly think Iâd be welcome. We canât risk it. Iâm sorry, Detective Russo. Would I? Yes. Should I? No.â
âJust Danny,â he says. âCall me Danny.â
Kicking absently at a weed growing out of the snow, she says quietly, âAll right. Danny.â
âTalk to me. What do I do?â
âSimple. You walk right up to the front door. After that, Iâm sure the way will present itself, just like this gate opening. Another possibility is instruction. Itâs likely you might hear voices, like whispers in your mind, telling you what to do.â The idea seems to appall Russo, so Hillerman moves on quickly. âI can tell you that we know of at least one person who came here, and he was just fine.â
âWho?â I ask.
âKing Paul. He swore fealty to East Side and wielded the power of necromancy. At some point he must have come through here, and he was fine.â
âSure, yeah, he was dandy, except for the part where he was a psychopathic serial killer, and now heâs dead.â
âYes, except for that. Thank you. Youâre so helpful.â
âNo worries,â Russo says. âIf Charlotte says itâs fine, itâs fine.â
To me, she says sharply, âItâs fine.â Then she directs a much softer tone at Russo. âIâm not trying to push you, Detectiveââ She corrects herself. âDanny. Believe it or not, I still remember how it feels to be in your shoes. It never really goes away or gets any easier.â
He rubs the back of his neck. âIâm not gonna lie. The night club, I was definitely feeling. This place, not so much.â
âSee, and thatâs it, right there. Thatâs why youâre so well equipped for this. Youâre not going to crack, when others would.â
âWhyâs that?â
âBecause youâre not putting on a front right now. Youâre scared, and youâre nervous, but youâre not trying to act otherwise. Youâre an honest and open person with no filter. You donât lieânot to others and especially not to yourselfânot even in the form of exaggeration, because when you do talk a big game, itâs because you actually believe every word of it. Bottom lineâthereâs nothing false about you, which makes you damn near demon-proof. They wonât be able to worm their lies and deceit and corruption into such a genuine mind. The first false note out of your mouth, weâd recognize itâeven me, and I just met you.â
Russo stands in awe of her assessment, which would have come across as flattery if it werenât so spot-on, as though sheâs known him for years. They stand there looking at each other in silence, each true to formâHillerman unreadable and Russo an open book. Heâs absolutely conquered. Stick a fork in this oneâheâs done. As chemistry arcs between them, I try to make eyes at Brenner, but heâs too busy studying the lovebirds closely.
Hillerman breaks eye contact first, kicking at that weed again. âOrâŠI could be totally wrong about you.â
âYouâre not,â Jay says quickly. âHeâs the real deal.â
Russo winks at me. âMy wingman, everybody. None better. Feeling it right here.â He taps a fist to his chest. âGroup hug?â
âGo,â Hillerman barks.
âAlready gone.â He enters the courtyard, walking past rows of headstones. Twice, he whirls suddenly, startled.
Hillerman curses under her breath. âWeâre attracting too much attention.â
âYou see them?â
âTheyâre watching through the gate. They donât seem to want to go into the courtyard. Not sure if thatâs good or bad.â
âBut theyâre just ghosts. They canât do anything.â
âYes, they can, and theyâre doing it right now.â
I jump back from the iron gate. âWhat? Are they touching me?â
âThey donât have to. They bring an aura, and the more there are of them, the stronger the aura. Youâre feeling it right now. Fear and anxiety.â
âMy heartâs pounding,â Russo says. âSomethingâs not right.â
âDonât stop.â
Russo slows his steps. âIf I keep going, something bad will happen to you guys.â
âNo, it wonât. Thatâs just what they want you to feel. Itâs manufactured. Push through it.â
I hear leaves crunching behind me. Jay whips around, raises his gun. When he starts to move away from us, toward the sound, Hillerman loses it. âDammit, stay your ass put, Brenner, do you hear me? Thereâs a whole lot of chatter going on right now. I need you to listen to me. My voice. Brenner?â
âI hear you.â
âGet over here next to me. None of us goes off on our own. Not for any reason. Got it?â
As Jay obeys, sidestepping toward Hillerman, I feel a slight tickle at the base of my spine. It starts as nothing but a breeze, raising goose bumps across my back, but then it seems to thicken somehow, gaining weight and formâthe form of five fingers and a palm, sliding effortlessly beneath my clothes to caress my waist. Even though I havenât made a sound, Hillerman turns toward me, and her mouth drops open. Sheâs looking at something behind me, just over my shoulder.
I want to cry out, but an ice-cold dread has lodged in my throat. When I try to move, the hand tightens, digging its fingertips into my skin.
âDonât,â
