mother.

The atmosphere became very tense. The parents were angry, and the children were confused about how to convince them.

Suddenly there was a rumbling sound. The walls started shaking as if an earthquake had struck. A few glasses clattered to the ground.

The parents looked around with frightened eyes.

James stared at the wall, sensing something. The rumbling sound was familiar.

Suddenly, a dark space opened up in the ceiling, and strangely clad figures started to drop out.

The children grinned as they recognized the figures at once.

The Scavenger looked regal, his Lightning Sword gleaming golden. Pyros stood to his side. Thomas, Staler and Skazen jumped from the black portal with smiling faces.

Skazen, on landing, at once threw a golden shell to the ground. It burst, and suddenly the cones that people wear on birthdays started appearing on everyone’s heads. A big cake appeared on the dining table. Balloons appeared all around, and the Scavenger shouted, “Happy First Independence Day of the Dark World!”

James realized what had happened. They had spent twelve hours on Earth since their return from the Dark World, which meant that a year had passed in the Dark World.

“This was the exact day when the Dark World was saved forever,” Pyros said in a cheerful voice.

The shocked parents had nothing to say. They just stared at the strange figures, bewildered by the turn of events.

Matt’s dad moved forward towards the Scavenger and spoke in a shaking voice, “Who are you? How did you enter my house?”

“Thank God you all are here. What a wonderful timing!” Daniel said excitedly, facing the Scavenger. “We were trying to tell truth to our parents but they think that we are crazy and suffering from hallucinations.”

“I see the problem.” The Scavenger turned towards the parents and said, “For a year in the Dark World, which means twelve hours on Earth, they were with me, fighting for the safety of my world and this Universe. If it weren’t for them, the Dark World and later, the Earth, would have been in control of powerful evil forces by now.”

“How can we believe you?” Archer’s mom shouted back.

“By this.” The Scavenger waved his hands, and a flame lit up in his hand.

The parents gasped.

“Your children possess Elemental Powers. They can do all this too, but their powers don’t work on Earth. They are very effective in the Dark World.”

Pyros stepped forward. “Spare a couple of minutes. Let me show you everything that these children did in the Dark World.”

Before the parents could say anything, Pyros waved his hands in front of the parents. The parents stood still as if they were converted into statues.

“What’s happening?” Daniel asked.

“Wait. I am showing them our entire journey through the Dark World,” Pyros replied as he kept waving his hands in front of the parents’ eyes. “Just relax. It will only take two minutes. Thousands of images are flashing through their minds.”

Pyros brought his hands down after two minutes. The parents came out of their trance. They had expressions of shock and surprise on their faces.

“Unbelievable! I am so proud of you, James and your friends. Marvellous.” James’s father moved forward and hugged James.

“I am sorry I doubted you,” Daniel’s mother said to him as she gave him a hug.

“It’s nothing to feel sorry about,” Pyros said. “You humans have been conditioned to believe that there is nothing such as magic. But we, in our world, eat, drink and live magic.” Pyros clicked his fingers and roses appeared in his hand. He gave a rose to each of the parents.

As the parents began to digest the fact that their children had indeed saved an entire world from evil, they felt proud of the boys.

At that moment, the doorbell rang. From the eye-hole in the door, Matt’s mother peeped and turned to the gathering.

“It’s the police,” she announced.

There was commotion all around.

“Please let the Dark World remain a secret. No one would ever understand. And we all will be taken to a mental hospital,” James pleaded with Matt’s father as he moved to open the door.

The Scavenger and his group disappeared into the air.

Matt’s father opened the door.

Two policemen stood at the door. One of them said. “Thanks for the call yesterday informing us that your kids are back. We need to do some formalities. Can we have a brief interaction with the kids?”

Matt’s father looked back at the drawing room. The people from the Dark World were not there. He welcomed the police officers inside.

The children smiled at the officers. But, they were tense, unsure of what was going to happen next.

Matt’s father said in a calm tone, “I am sorry, Officers, it seems there was some misunderstanding on our part. You see, we are four families who are very close. We had decided to celebrate my birthday yesterday together at my house. While we parents gathered here, the children gathered at Daniel’s house, hiding their plans from us, waiting to give us some surprise. It was a Saturday, so the children were together since early morning. I am sorry; it was a prank by the naughty children on us. Since we got worried about their safety, we informed the police.”

The children heaved a sigh of relief. In their hearts, they admired Matt’s father.

“Don’t worry,” the other policeman said. “It’s fine. I am glad that all is well. By the way, happy belated birthday.”

Matt’s father thanked the police officers as they left.

“Thanks for covering our backs,” James said to Matt’s father.

“It’s the least we can do,” Matt’s father replied. “Compared to what you guys have done, this was nothing.”

The Scavenger reappeared along with his friends and addressed the parents, “These four Elemental children, our saviours, have great respect in the Dark World. Our people worship them. You have brought these courageous souls into this world. Please accept my deepest respects.”

The Scavenger took out a card and placed it on the table. He said, “This is no ordinary card. I would like to invite you all to the Dark World.” He turned to the
