on him and that Nerea had told me he didn’t want to see me again, "but it's better if we focus on work and put what happened behind us. Okay?" I said with the best of my smiles, hoping that our present situation could be at least cordial.

Why of all the useless men on this planet that one had to appear in my life? I didn't know the answer and didn't believe in coincidences or that Steven was a disturbed person who was stalking me.

Better think about the first possibility or you will have nightmares at night.

"We can make this process tedious and extremely long or, on the contrary, pleasant and short from which your company will come out completely unscathed. You decide, Maria Acosta."

What? Has this moron just threatened me? I’m going to throw him out the window and pretend he jumped himself. I'd do the world a favour.

"Sorry?" I asked as if I didn't understand.

"Come on, Maria! I know very well that you set up that scene with the boyfriend, who’s your boss, just to make me jealous. I admit it had some impact, but I forgive you."

Give him the prize for the greatest idiot in history!

"When it comes to women, you're more lost than Pinocchio in IKEA, aren't you?" I blurted out crossing my arms. At that moment I thanked the Lord that my secretary came back with coffee along with a bouquet of gardenias.

"From your fiancée, Miss Acosta," Ingrid interrupted, handing me the bouquet and placing the coffee on the table.

There you have it, know-it-all. "Now deal with it," I thought closing my eyes to breathe in the sweet fragrance.

"They smell good!" I exclaimed smiling as I took the card from the bouquet to read it greedily.

Are these your favourite flowers, my precious fiancée?

If so, I'll give you a bunch of them every day.

Forever Yours,

Damian Devoir

Damian was perfect! Fucking perfect!

"You were saying?" I said looking at Steven. "In case you didn't know, I'm engaged," I added showing the huge precious stone I was wearing on my finger.

"Come on, we both know it's a farce!" he said staring at me.

I swear, if Nerea said anything to him, I'll kill her!

She had probably talked about it with Mathews, and he in turn communicated it to the idiot in front of me.

"Sure. A farce to the point of getting married on the first Saturday of May," I said so convinced that I too believed it. "In case you had any doubts, I just did Nerea a favour when I agreed to go out to dinner with you."

"I suppose then we will go for the tedious and extremely long process," he said, standing up with an angry expression. Well, at that point Steven had just one thing to do: to haul his ass out of my office. I was also aware that the more he was pissed off, the longer and more unpleasant the audit was going to be.

"What do you want to make the audit short?" I asked thinking that, if it was a lunch, a dinner or even a date, I could think about it just for the peace of mind.

"Come to bed with me," he said with such coldness that I shivered with disgust. Did he really dare say that? Did he have the nerve to blackmail me for sex? "It shouldn’t be a big effort. I know that you want me. I knew it since the first night we met. Even if you say that you accepted that date to do Nerea a favour, I know that deep down you like me, that you are dying to get into my bed and that all those stories with your boss are just an excuse to make me beg. "

"Look, Steven, you have no future with me. I find you blander than a glass of water. The right thing to do would be to tell you to fuck off. I’m not surprised that no woman approaches you, because you scare them: first with your appearance and then with your way of being arrogant. In your favour I can say that you have more self-esteem than all the Victoria's Secret models combined. Now, if you don't mind, get out of my office and take all the time you want to do the audit. In the meantime I will sue you for extortion and sexual harassment."

From his livid face I could tell he didn’t expect that outcome.

As soon as he left my office, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. It took me several seconds to realize that the office telephone was ringing.

"Maria Acosta's office," I said in a serious and formal tone.

"How professional you sound! I didn't expect you to answer like that."

"Damian?" I asked surprised. He usually showed up in my office or called me on my cell phone.

"I called you on your cell phone, but I guess it was on silent mode, because you didn't answer my messages."

"Yes, er... I haven’t seen them yet. I've been busy with an audit manager in my office," I said without giving any details.

"Right. I was informed that he wasn’t expected. Treat that client well, he's too important for the company. Give him all the documents he asks for and make sure he's satisfied."

Seriously? Well, too late. Luckily he couldn't see my annoyed face.

"Sure," I replied. I closed my eyes and hoped that my last threat would bring that foolish and misogynistic snob to his senses. Otherwise I would really sue him.

"That’s my girl!" he answered happily. I sighed hoping not to fail. After all, there was nothing to fear, right? Everything was in order and the numbers would add up perfectly. "Did you get the flowers?" he asked changing the subject.

"Yes, they are beautiful," I replied, looking at the bouquet and
