This was an interesting piece. It had no battle-related bonuses but--in games as well as real life--charisma boosts could be very unpredictable and pay out in massive ways. Or they could bring unwanted attention, which was something I definitely didn't want. I didn't want any attention at all for that matter. Louie on the other hand, could sell ice to a yeti just by standing there. I could only imagine what a boost like this would do to his charisma.
I added the ring to the pile and felt a bit bad about how quickly the sum was growing. What was very interesting, however, was that all of the D-grade jewelry had its own abilities. This, coupled with the fact that they could be enchanted to raise their Magic Defense, would make a huge difference if someone at level 19 had to fight someone that was only one level higher but had already upgraded their equipment. And the power gap would only grow larger if they'd changed their class at level 20 and got some new skills or upgrades to their old ones.
We had no time to do our class-change quests now but I hoped renewing our gear would be enough for what we were about to do. I adjusted my search and started to look at the top available D-grade earrings.
Name: Cave Dweller's Earring
Type: Earring
Rarity: D Grade
Magic Defense: 36
Durability : 1050/1050
Weight: 15st.
Description : This earring is able to redirect the flow of air in the ear canal of the wearer in order to guide them to open spaces. These earrings are very popular among the dwarven races, since they frequently explore or work in underground mazes.
Price: $7,750
These specific earrings must have been pretty popular in New York, since there were about a dozen ready to be delivered immediately. This could mean one of two things. Either there were extensive underground dungeons and mazes underneath the city, or this recipe was profitable enough for someone to be crafting them in bulk. Either way, I made a note to myself that I should investigate once I got the chance.
Having found all the accessories Louie and I would need, I changed pages in the DEM market and tried to look for the best possible armor for me. I didn't know yet if my class would favor heavy or light armor in terms of bonuses once I upgraded it, so I decided to go with the one that would work better for this mission. Since our first objective was retrieving people and only killing Abrathion if possible, it meant we'd want to rely on silent infiltration. With that in mind, I decided on leather armor.
Name: Manticore Leather Tunic
Type: Upper Armor (Light)
Rarity: D Grade
Physical Defense: 77
MP Increment: 0
Durability: 1350/1350
Weight: 3120st.
Description: A tunic made from the skin of a manticore. While manticores possess multiple physiological traits that are similar to sphinxes, they lack thousands of years of evolutionary sapience. They are fierce predators, and their bodies are able to withstand piercing attacks of great force even though they are not covered in hard or metal scales. The elasticity and durability of the manticore leather make it a popular crafting material, which led the species to near-extinction numbers in certain planes, before the act of ethical manticore hunting was introduced four hundred years ago.
Price: $82,500
I added the tunic to my cart and hoped that the Physical Defense bonus from the armor was worth its price tag. At this rate, I would need more than one million dollars from Rory. I caught myself wondering if this was how rich people slowly got disconnected from the value of money, since I was now talking about getting a loan of one million dollars as if it was something mundane.
In the end, I decided I could do nothing about it and searched for more manticore leather pieces, in case I'd be able to get a set bonus or something of the sort. Unfortunately, it looked like there were nothing else readily available so I needed to settle for a mix and match set.
Name: Chromatic Sharkskin Gaiters
Type: Lower Armor (Light)
Rarity: D Grade
Physical Defense: 48
MP Increment: 0
Durability: 1170/1170
Weight: 1550st.
Description: Chromatic sharks are one of the few species of sharks that can swim in salt and fresh waters, as well as float in astral environments by changing their form into pure chroma. Gaiters made from their skin provide a 5% boost in swimming speed.
Price: $103,500
Name: Chromatic Sharkskin Gloves
Type: Hands
Rarity: D Grade
Physical Defense: 29
MP Increment: 0
Durability: 820/820
Weight: 630st.
Description: Chromatic sharks are one of the few species of sharks that can swim in salt and fresh waters as well as float in astral environments by changing their form into pure chroma. Gloves made from their skin provide a 2% boost in swimming speed.
Price: $11,500
There was definitely no need for me to get equipment that would boost my swimming speed, but since those pieces had the highest Physical Defense, I was happy with the extra boost they offered. In the grand scheme of things, the price differences between these pieces and those that had no additional effects was negligible. Perhaps I would need to do some more extensive research if I were to reach level 40 and needed to change to C-grade equipment, but that was stepping into the realm of wishful thinking at the moment.
I added the two sharkskin pieces to my cart and saw that the number of items it contained was larger than what I had put myself, meaning that Louie was almost done with his shopping as well. I updated my search parameters and looked for the last two pieces of armor I needed.
