let me confirm the order then," I said and looked at the grand total. "Fucking hell, that's two point three--"

I stopped talking when Louie growled at me again.

"Okay, okay," I said and raised my hands in surrender. "We need these things, I get it."

Still, it was more than two million dollars at once. It wasn't like I felt this was the wrong thing to do, and I was way past feeling uneasy for borrowing money from Rory. But it was just such a huge number. I'd spent fifty million dollars for Louie's quest but that was months of work.

On the other hand, the way our business was expanding, and especially if we were able to take Abrathion out of the picture, paying this back would be a matter of weeks. Not giving it any more thought, I pressed "Buy" and was informed that Rory had made ten million dollars available for my account to use.

It made absolute sense. Rory was level 43 and already using C-grade equipment. Additionally, his job was to know the prices of materials and crafting items. Of course he would know I'd need millions to be properly equipped and by the looks of it, he'd given me enough to buy the absolute best equipment as well as fully enchanting everything. I guessed my promise to help with funding his campaign against the dragon had meant a lot to him.

"Ommanth, I'd better place the orb back in my inventory," I said and stood up. "The delivery person will be here any minute now."

"But of course," the dragon said as I picked up his spherical prison. "Louie, we shall continue our experiments some other day, I hope."

"Certainly Ommy," he said.

"Farewell," I said and placed the orb back in my extra-dimensional inventory. "Ommy?" I said to Louie. "You gave the dragon a pet name?"

"Why not? We're friends."

"Friends? Just don't say that while Rory's about or we'll never hear the end of it."

"And with good reason," Viki interjected. "There is a reason dragons can be so charming."

"Because underneath their hard scales is a very soft heart?" Louie asked and flashed her a grin.

"When it comes to dragons, you'd better sleep with one eye open," she said and went back to looking out of the window again.

This time, she gasped as she turned back. A gigantic bat was flapping its wings just outside of our apartment, several hundred feet above the ground. I rarely had deliveries so late at night, but it wasn't the first time I'd had something delivered by Tony the vampire. I waved my hand, inviting him into my apartment and the bat took on a greenish hue before gradually changing into a green mist. Tony, now in mist form, crossed through one of the tilted windows and entered the living room. Once inside, he changed to his normal vampire form.

His hair was black and fell below his shoulders in thick black curls. His pale skin was in absolute contrast with his black suit which, as he mentioned once, was one of the few things that had almost made him quit this job when he was asked to replace it with a DEM uniform. That, and a client who loved baking garlic bread after midnight.

His completely black sword hung lazily on his hip and his shield was, as always, on his back. He looked at me with his usual deadpan stare--while Tony was always very friendly and an excellent delivery person, there was something in the stillness of his eyes and facial muscles that made me think of a corpse. Until Louie ran over to him and started jumping up at his knees.

"Hey, little fella," he said in his thick Boston accent. "What are ya up to, huh?"

"Got my D-grade mastery, Tony," Louie said and wagged his tail like crazy.

"Oh, your boy's growing up, Alex," the vampire said and took out his phone. "Here's let's take a selfie. My momma always likes it when I send her pictures with you."

I smiled at him and, right on cue, Rory let out a very loud snore.

"You better put that thing down before wildlife control finds out," Tony joked, pointed his chin at the dwarf. "Little gnome fellow sounds like a war machine right there."

That was the first time I thought I saw Viki smile for an instant before putting on her cold face again.

"Alright, lots of things for you today," Tony said and started taking out boxes from his inventory. "This should be all of it, Alex."

"Thank you very much," I said.

Suddenly his stare intensified and his smile disappeared.

Just as I was getting a little anxious over whether he was casting some kind of vampire spell on me, his demeanor broke and he laughed heartily.

"You know I like fucking with you, man," he said between laughs. "I'd never cast a glamour on you."

"Yeah. You're funny, man," I said, much more awkwardly than I intended.

"Alright, have a great night now. And Louie, lemme know when you wanna talk with my cousin about that plan of yours," he said, before transforming back into green mist.

Once the vampire had left, we started opening up the boxes and equipping our new gear. Once we'd tried it all on, we laid all of the enchantment scrolls out on the table.

"Shall I start with the weapons then?" I asked Louie.

"Go ahead," he said and jumped up on the couch to get a better view.

I placed the two swords on the table as well and opened the curled-up scroll. It was empty, save for a drawing of a red sword that took up almost its whole length. A new notification appeared in front of me.
