smashed onto my back like a black, red, white, and radiation green avalanche. I applied POSITION vectors hurling them straight up into space. Their weight gone, I pushed up to standing only to be—

SMASH!

Hit from behind, though not as hard as the first time. As large as some of these demons were, none were any bigger than I was as Mega Beast, and most were smaller. This time I stumbled forward and led with my fists, punching an armored black shark-headed demon downward on his snout, slamming his chin into the black stone pavers. I stomped his back with one armored boot and threw a curving punch hooking into the skull of a white elephant-headed demon wearing medieval plate mail. He went flying into the black curtain wall, his trunk trailing behind him before he bashed into the stone and sank to sitting.

A red grizzly bear demon with a red serpent’s tail and wearing red chainmail came at me swinging a battle axe blinding fast.

Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!

If it was a plasma axe, the plasma edge was gone because of my Sphere of Absorption, but it appeared to have a standard metal edge that was plenty dangerous.

I backed up and dodged the blinding arcs of the grizzly bear’s red blade. His mistake was using long, slow arcs to swing the huge axe. That left him exposed between every swing. And I had POSITION vectors. The next time he swung — whoosh! — I vectored the big axe faster. It carried him swinging around much farther than he’d planned, and he sliced the red two-headed dog demon next to him in half, cutting straight through the dog demon’s armored torso.

I grabbed the grizzly bear demon’s red serpent tail and used him as a flail, swinging him into a crowd of smaller white demons and knocking them aside like bowling pins. They slammed into the black curtain and keep walls on either side, knocking most of them out cold. The ones still standing were dazed and wobbly. I could do this all day if it wasn’t for the atomic bomb ready to blow beneath our feet.

I wanted to grab Theia from where she was standing watchfully inside the small alcove of the lead bubble hole in the wall. She had her rifle at the ready, but it was useless with my absorption sphere running, and I didn’t want to drag her into this mess. She was liable to get cut in two by the slicing swords of this white lion-headed demon or smashed flatter than a pancake by that black dinosaur-headed demon.

Worse, the entirety of the black, red, green, and white demon armies seemed to have converged on our position. There were hundreds of them in the immediate vicinity pressing toward us.

Unable to concentrate on developing a clever exit strategy, I bashed and smashed, punching and kicking, elbowing and kneeing everything within striking range. My fists went through faces, literally, bashing out the backs of one demon skull after another. My swinging feet cut raggedly through torsos — literally cut — shattering spinal columns and separating hips from ribcages in a gorey display. I yanked arms and legs from sockets, using said arms and legs as clubs and whips. I threw smaller demons into larger demons, knocking down the latter and knocking out the former.

No matter how hard I fought, there were always more.

But there wasn’t more time.

We were never going to make it.

I tried extracting MASS from the demons to shrink them, but it wasn’t working yet again. Could be they moved too quickly, or there were too many, or once again, somehow they were completely resistant to mass extraction.

Whatever the explanation, they weren’t shrinking, and that left me still fighting.

Worse, I was getting hammered by demon maces, war hammers, and other bludgeoning weapons. If not for my Mega-sized power armor, the swords also slashing at me would have done serious damage. Even so, the sword blades hit hard, biting painfully through my armor. There was little I could do about it because I couldn’t dodge or defend against every weapon coming at me, or the ones I couldn’t see coming at my back.

“Behind you!” Theia shouted over comms.

I twisted around and—

KROOM!

Some big, black minotaur demon slammed his big mace smashing into my shoulder. Despite my protective power armor, my Mega Beast bones exploded in shattering shards of excruciating pain, sending me stumbling backward into a bunch of smaller red demons. Hopefully I crushed them all as I sat down hard on top of them and against the outer curtain wall.

“My king!” Theia gasped, jumping out from her lead alcove in her now-black power armor that matched the black stones. She lifted her rifle to fire. Nothing happened.

I dropped my Sphere of Absorption.

Suddenly, hellfire roared from the barrel of Captain Theia’s ABR-17. Firing on full auto, she started mowing down surprised demons by the dozens, including the minotaur with a mace who had just smashed my shoulder. There was no intimidating BRAAAAAP! because of the vacuum. Only the deadly flash of flying bolts. The demons were slow to realize their bolt blasters were now functional too.

But the demons wielding plasma swords and axes instantly realized their blades had powered up, crackling with deadly energy that was either black, white, red, or radiation green.

With their weapons live, that meant whatever slim advantage I’d given Theia and her ABR-17 had evaporated.

Our remaining time was doing the same.

0:53…

Not that it mattered.

There wasn’t enough time to fight our way out now, leaving us only a few more seconds of glory to create as much castle carnage as possible. The demon bodies were literally piling up around us. In a few seconds, the backpack bomb would incinerate this Space Castle and everyone on it — including Theia and me — in a blinding flash.

At least we’d go out with a bang — the atomic kind — and fighting as we went.

There were worse ways to die…

—: Chapter 44 :—

“Stay back!” Theia screamed over comms, blasting away
