I strolled out the hexagonal hatchway and paused in the hexagonal corridor crowded with attentive Shock Knights. We chatted briefly about my minimal injuries and I again thanked them for their service.
Then I went into Captain Theia’s hexagonal room. She was sitting up on the bed in a pink gown. It was the first time I’d seen her clothed indoors.
“Heh,” I smiled. “How you feeling?”
“Like this exam is a waste of time.” She folded her arms defiantly across her pink gown.
“Did they find anything wrong?”
“Nothing that won’t heal. I should be by your side now, my king. But Major Akeso ordered I stay here until dinner.”
“That’s only a few hours from now.”
“I should be wherever you are, my king.”
“I’m right here,” I smiled and stepped beside the bed.
She gazed up at me with her kryptonite eyes. “Does my gown bother you?”
“What? No. Why would it?”
“Because it covers so much.”
“Eh.” I waved a hand. “I don’t mind.”
“You’re sure?”
“Yeah, why?”
Theia smirked, “I have never met a man who preferred me covered.”
“Oh,” I snorted. “It’s fine.” I didn’t know what else to say to that. Maybe: you’re hot as hell and I could stare at you naked all day? Didn’t seem appropriate at the moment.
“Thank you again, my king. Permission to speak off the royal record?”
“What, just between you and me?”
“Yes, my king.”
“Yeah. I won’t tell anyone. What is it?”
She lowered her voice to an embarrassed whisper, “I feel terrible it was you saving me. What will my girls think when they find out?” She glanced out the open hexagonal hatchway, frowning with concern. The Shock Knights were chatting amongst themselves and paying us no attention.
“I won’t tell anyone,” I chuckled. “Not that it matters. You kicked ass back there. Those space demons won’t mess with you a second time.”
“You exaggerate,” Theia snickered and looked incredibly gorgeous doing it. “If it wasn’t for you…”
“You mean you,” I emphasized. “You brought the backpack bomb through the Chaos Gate, and you killed a bunch of demons before I got to that asteroid.”
She rolled her eyes. “I should have killed more.”
“They’re all dead now,” I winked.
“We can hope,” she smiled. “Never in my life have I seen creatures such as those, my king. Or a strange world such as theirs. Have you?”
“Only in games,” I chuckled.
Theia frown thoughtfully, “Do you mean sporting events? Do your people have sporting events with such exotic beasts and strange locations on your home world?”
“I wish,” I chuckled, picturing an NFL football game with space demons on the field wearing helmets and pads instead of human players, and wielding plasma weapons. The football field wouldn’t be a flat rectangle of grass, of course. It would be triangular and tetrahedral with crazy gravity that allowed for M.C. Escher-style gameplay on all four grassy faces of the d4 Field Pyramid. “But I bet it would be a big hit where I’m from. Talk about fantasy football,” I laughed.
“I would like to see it sometime,” Theia smiled.
“Game like that?” I chuckled. “Who wouldn’t?”
“I meant your world,” Theia smiled. “If it’s as nice as you, my king, I have no doubt it’s a wonderful place to live.”
“It has its moments. Like anyplace else, it has its faults.”
“Perhaps you’ll visit it someday, my king?” The implication was that Theia would accompany me there.
For all the good memories I had of Earth, they were outweighed by the bad. My cheating ex Ingrid came to mind. What a scam that relationship had been. Her getting pregnant with Lance’s baby while she and I were talking marriage? And her pretending we had to wait for our wedding night to have sex? Please. I shrugged. “Personally, I like it better here, Captain.” I reached out and squeezed Theia’s bare wrist. “Where the good women are.” I smiled.
“And the good men,” she smiled back. “May I touch your Royal Person?”
“Sure. You don’t have to keep asking. Touch me any time you want.”
She nodded and reached over to wrap her fingers over mine where I was still grabbing her wrist.
Our eyes met and hers danced, glimmering with passion.
I was dying to kiss her.
“My king?” asked one of the hot nurses from the hatchway.
“Yeah?” I said, twisting to face her.
“Colonel Sadys is asking for you.”
I frowned, “What does she want?”
The nurse saddened and said, “It’s about our casualties from today. The colonel wants to discuss arrangements for the funeral memorial.”
“Okay, thanks,” I sighed. “Please tell her I’ll be right there.”
“Your wish is my command.”
I turned back to Theia, “Gotta go. Will you be here for a while?”
Theia smirked, “Until the major releases me or I decide to break out of here.”
I laughed. “Sounds like a plan. Come find me when you do.”
“Always.”
“Call me if you need help with your escape plan,” I winked.
“I will,” she smiled.
I walked as far as the door and stopped.
Leaving Theia here by herself was the last thing I wanted to do. After what we’d been through today, I wanted to sit with her a while longer. Just sit. Simply being in Theia’s presence would make any man feel like he’d hit the big time. For me, it was more than that. Much more. But I was king of this Harem Planet, and I had many other women who needed me, some of them who had given their lives to save mine today, women I’d never gotten to know and never would.
“Is something wrong, my king?” Theia asked carefully.
“No,” I lied with a sigh.
“I should be with you right now,” Theia said with determination.
When I heard the rustling of covers, I turned to see Theia sliding her long, bare legs off the bed. When her bare feet touched the floor, she winced slightly but did her best to hide it.
“Take it easy,” I chuckled. “For at least another hour. Okay?”
“If you insist, my king.”
“I do.”
“Make sure the Shock Knights know where you are.”
“I will. I’m not going far.
