If I fall here, I would have let them all down. Theyâre counting on me. Jill, Kain, theyâre counting on me. Gabriel, my dad, Rob. Damien opened his eyes just in time to side-step Nathanielâs punch. His body completely relaxed as he effortlessly dodged the lycanâs blows.
âWhat the hell?!â He tried lunging again with the same result. He began panting. His teeth clenched in anger. âThereâs no way you can be this good this fast! Kainâs a nobody!â Again and again he swung and kicked only to miss.
Eventually Damien grabbed Nathanielâs fist, gripping it tightly in his hand. âHeâs not a nobody, Nathaniel. If he was, you wouldnât be trying so hard to dishonor him. Your problem is youâre hiding all of your uncertainty and low self-esteem behind a false sense of power and confidence.â
Damien borrowed Kainâs legendary round-house kick, his heel finding its mark against Nathanielâs jaw. The force sent the alpha skidding on his heels across the ring. He lunged at Nathaniel, taking him into a submission hold to the ground.
âWhen this is over, you will apologize to Kain for disgracing his name and to Jill for demeaning her like you did. Got it?â
âFuck you!â Nathaniel gasped as Damien tightened his hold. He struggled to free himself, each attempt proved useless. âFine! I forfeit!â
Damien let Nathaniel go, rising to his feet. The defeated alpha huffed and puffed on the ground on his knees.
âWell done. Very well done.â Kain patted Damienâs shoulder. âI have nothing more I can teach you. You are now an alpha in your own right. Congratulations.â
Me? An alpha? Damienâs eyes widened in surprise. âKain, I donât want the title. Iâm not ready. Actually,â Damienâs words were cut off as Kain walked over to Nathaniel, towering above him.
âThe rules stand, Nathaniel. You are hereby stripped of your alpha title and sentenced to be banished with your beta to the mountains.â
Nathaniel clenched his teeth, growling through them and glaring at Lune who stood up against a tree shaking his head.
âWait!â Damienâs voice rang out, silencing the crowd.
Kain turned to watch as Damien made his way over to the kneeling lycan.
He reached out his hand. âNo. Itâs not right. I donât want the title.â
âWhat?â
âI donât want the title. What I do want is your help. We already have too many enemies as it is. We donât need to fight amongst ourselves,â Nathaniel looked at Damienâs hand. âWill you help us?â
Damien saw Nathanielâs eyes soften as he took his hand. âYeah.â
Kain nodded. His grin as wide as Damien had ever seen it. âA wise choice. For a newborn.â Kain chuckled, earning a playful shove from Damien.
âThis from a âhazbinâ?â Damien smirked thinking he got the better of the older alpha until he once again found himself flat on his back. OkayâŠstillâŠso wrongâŠ

The fight left Damienâs muscles sore on so many levels. When Jill offered to give him a back rub in the hot springs he never knew existed just a short hike up the mountains he was quick to agree.
âOw.â Damien cringed as Jill messaged his shoulders, trying to get the knots out of them.
âYou are such a big baby sometimes. That was amazing by the way. You fought so beautifully and gave Nathaniel mercy when he clearly didnât deserve it.â Jill rested her cheek against Damienâs shoulder. âYou really are so amazing, babe. You continue to astound and baffle me. You have such a pure heart and soul.â
âIâm not special, Jill. Everyone expects so much out of me. I donât have a clue what Iâm doing or what Iâm supposed to do.â
Jillâs hand running down his chest to his stomach combined with her warm tongue licking his neck froze the words in Damienâs throat.
âYou arenât alone. You have the respect of every alpha in the packs present. Our people love you. Our pups adore you. Why is it so wrong for them to see you as a symbol of hope?â
Damien hadnât thought about it the way Jill described. The Purifiers were supposed to be symbols of hope according to what she told him.
Jillâs hot breath in his ear sent trembling chills down his spine. âMy love, Iâm with pup.â
Water flew in Jillâs face as Damien shot up out of it. His eyes wide, his chest heaving with anxiety.
Jill shook her head trying to get the water out of her face. âI was late so I had Kyle take a test. It came back positive. Damien, Iâm pregnant.â

Silence lingered between them for what seemed like hours.
Jill watched as Damien paced the floor of their tent, his hand running over his face multiple times. âDamienâŠare you angry?â
Damien stopped pacing. His hand ran the length of his face prior to glancing over at Jill. His heart felt like a rock in his chest capable of falling through his body to the ground. She was looking at the floor as she did when she felt he would reject her.
To comfort her, he dropped to his knees in front of her. Using his finger and thumb on her chin, he raised her head. âNo Jill. Iâm not angry. Iâm actually really excited. Itâs just I donât know the first thing about being a father; let alone to pups.â It still felt weird to call them that. His thoughts shifted to the upcoming war and the probabilities Jill had given him about pup mortality.
Jill had been elected to take on Lilith. Now, there was no way he was letting her fight. Not when she was carrying his children.
The sudden wrapping of Jillâs arms around his waist brought Damienâs attention to the beautiful woman in front of him.
âIâm so glad.â
A squeak escaped Jillâs throat as Damien quickly lifted her onto his hips. The thin material of her
