Lily

When I first saw her, she had the saddest little tiny face. She could fit in my hand. We sat in the store and played with her for a moment. She was so young she didn't have much endurance, she got tired fast. I think she may have been taken from her mother a little too soon as well. When I picked her up to talk to my boyfriend, Michael, about whether we should buy her or not, I looked away for a moment. When I looked down upon her again she was sound asleep. I was in love. Her eyes fluttered and she twitched ever so slightly. Her little mouth formed an “O” and her tongue came out a little, she made a sucking sound. There was no way I was walking out of that store with out her!

We paid way more than we should have, number one because she was a “designer dog” a Puggle; number two, we bought her from a “puppy mill” mall store. I have never regretted it for one minute.

On the way home we had to stop and get her some food and toys. She was still sleeping but I couldn't leave her in the car. I gently loaded her into my purse. This was seven years ago, long before it was popular to carry your dog in your purse. When I went to retrieve my wallet from my purse, Lily, still asleep, became visible, the cashier let out the biggest “Awwwwwww” I quickly paid for my things and left the store before I drew too much attention.

Once home, Lily was ready to play again. She slid across the tile floor, trying to thwart some evil stuff toy from getting away, or she just liked to chase things. It wasn't long before she sought out a lap and loving hands to snuggle with.

Much of the first few hours at her new home went this way. When it was time to go to bed, Michael and I placed little sleeping Lily between us in bed. She was happy as long as she had a paw on both of us. That was our routine until she was almost a year old.

We always talked to her like she was a little girl, as if she understood us. I think this is why today we can tell her to do something, sometimes complex, and she does it. We even started spelling things and she knew what we meant. One of the cutest things she does is when we ask for a kiss, she comes close and puts her cheek on our lips.

She now has two younger brothers, Oscar the dachshund, and Monkey Boy another Puggle. Lily, or Princess Lily as she has come to be known, allows us all to live in her house. Make no mistake about it she is the boss.
