Poem

They say the eyes are windows to the soul.

The looking glass into who we are.

In her eyes,

she isn’t beautiful,

no matter how many people tell her.

She isn’t smart,

no matter how many A’s are on her report card.

Because of you.

She knows there is no such thing as perfection.

She’s been broken more times than able to count.

And she has the scars to prove it.

Though her eyes never cloud with tears,

and her face never reveals anything but a smile.

To even those close to her,

she is always the giddy,

innocent little girl.

But each scar reveals a story.

A lost friend,a broken heart.

Each bringing her closer to the end.

Eventually her heart will give in.

As her eyes gloss over,

closing for the last time,

you will regret the words of hate.

Your heart will quench for redemption.

But its too late.

She will be imprinted in your mind.

Every time you make a wrong decision,

her eyes will fill your memory.

You killed her.

Not with a knife or a gun and bullets.

But with your words,

the taunting,

the whispers surrounding her.

“Slut, whore, bitch, worthless, waste of a life.”

All the names piled upon her shoulders until she couldn’t take the strain.

You broke her.

And now it’s too late.

Maybe next time you’ll pay attention to what lies just beyond the surface.

Right the wrongs before its too late.

Because the next time,

it might just be you taking one last glance at the world.

And as your last tear streams down your cheek,

maybe you’ll remember the beauty of the light in her eyes,

before the light was extinguished.
