When I was a little girl,

I thought X's and O's weren't just letters.

I believed in ghosts and read fairy tales.

And like in all fairy tales, I believed there was always a happily ever after.

In my mind everyone lived forever.

No one cried or even felt pain.

It was my own little world, oasis, safe haven.

But by the age of 12 reality seemed to be thrown at me,

Just like it does every optimistic child.

In a blinding light everything good disappeared from my life.

The truth deafening my ears.

Old friends became new strangers,

Laughter became whispers,

And the once outspoken, exuberant girl turned into just another lifeless shadow.

What does the world have to offer anymore.

Education is a joke, run by those who know little themselves,

Children being murdered, kidnapped,

Women being raped and beaten,

Citizens stripped of their dignity by the very people who were trusted.

The very country created based on the principles of freedom and equality,

Won't even accept the sexuality of those living in it.

There are much bigger issues.

Drug abuse,

Those known as druggies, 

Convicted of a crime.

When all we wanted,

Was relief from reality.

The foul truth that binds us to the ground,

Refusing to let us fly proud and free.

What do we want from the world?

The chance to be who we choose in this society of judgment.

The option to be as crazy and outgoing as we were taught we could.

To embrace the reality of who I am,

Who I always was.

Everyday someone dies from the shock.

The weight becomes too much to bear,

Carrying what seems to be the earth on their shoulders.

Each of us burdened as Atlas.

But these aren't only the symptoms of depression.

This is the effect of the world we live in.

I will never be the little girl I once was.

I am trapped in Hell.
