own child and that's what we did. We have loved you more than we ever thought we would, so much that we even forgot that you're not our own," Mom said in-between sobs.

My mind was reeling with this information, so much that I had to take a few steps back, away from my mom, in order to take it all in. I don't know how to take this. I really don’t know what to do. But what I do know is that I love this family I grew up with. I can't imagine my life without them, which is why I say what I say next.

"For some odd reason, I love you all, even with everything you just told me. You are all I know, which is why I don't want to go to that woman you were talking to a few minutes ago. Whether she claims that she is my aunt or not, I am not leaving you," I finished as I rushed forward to hug both Mom and Dad at the same time.

My last statement made quite an impact on them, as they remained speechless. It was as I stood there hugging them that I heard someone beginning to climb the stairs towards the bedrooms. I hadn’t even noticed when Trent arrived home because of all the emotions and thoughts running through me. We all looked up to him in unison.

"What's the drama all about? Did your little baby come home crying about being bullied again?" Trent sneered. I wished I could go over there and smack that sneer right off his face. You could tell he was really getting onto my nerves because I had never even thought about hitting someone in anger.

"No Trent. We're in a serious discussion here," Dad replied. Trent shrugged and started walking up the stairs again, but Dad stopped him. "Trent! Get back here! There’s something you have to know!” Trent kept walking, so Dad finally blurted out, “Rachelle isn't your real sister and her real aunt wants to take her away to New York!" Trent stopped walking up the stairs. I saw him ball up and clench his fists. He just stood there, not saying a word for a couple of moments before continuing to walk up the stairs and entering his room, which is just beside mine.

"Trent!" Dad was about to follow him up into his room, but Mom stopped him.

"James, just let him be honey. He's grown up. He just needs time to process all of this," Mom told him.

I don't know why, but tears fell quickly from my eyes when I saw him walk away. Maybe he really doesn’t care about me anymore after all. After few minutes, the doorbell rang. Dad and I both gave Mom questioning looks, and she explained that when my aunt Jennifer called, she was already in town.

I wanted to hide, somewhere where that woman who called herself my aunt couldn’t see me.

"I'll go open it," Dad said dejectedly and strode over to the door.

"But, James!" Mom started crying once again, causing me to do the same.

"She has the right to decide for her niece. Let's just try our best to talk to her in a nice way and ask if we can keep Rachelle with us. Besides that's what Rachelle wants. Isn’t it?" I nodded my head in affirmation and hugged him.

Mom told me to go to my bedroom and come down when I felt ready to face my aunt. She stayed downstairs with Dad to meet the woman who wanted to take me away from my family.

I entered my room and scanned every single detail of it. My eyes stopped at the three picture frames placed on my lamp shade desk. The first picture is of me and Trent when I was six and he was seven years old. He was hugging me while I sat on his lap. The next picture was our family picture taken when I was six as well. The next was another picture of me and Trent on my tenth birthday when he placed a dollop of icing on my nose and ending up wiping some of it somehow on his forehead. We were smiling like idiots into the camera. These were the moments that were really unforgettable.

I went to my bathroom and stared at my face on the mirror. My eyes were still red and puffy because of my earlier tears. I turned on the faucet and washed my face, drying it with my bath towel.

Before going downstairs, something in the back of my mind pushed me to knock at Trent's door. I was surprised when I twisted the knob and found it unlocked, which was really unusual.

I entered his room, letting my eyes adjust to the darkness of the room, seeing as the curtains were drawn and that made the room very dark. He was sitting on the edge of his bed, his back turned to me, with his head in his hands.

"Trent? I know we haven't been talking for so long but can you give me a sec?" I asked as I approached him. But he didn't even respond. "Hey?" This time I held his shoulders.

"What are you doing here? You heard it loud and clear, didn’t you? You are not my sister and I don't care!” He got up and grabbed me by the shoulders, shaking me. “You can now go with your aunt! She's your only family left, isn't she? So now, go!” he exclaimed as he shoved me in the direction of the door. I stumbled and fell, landing hard on my bottom. “I don't need you around anyway and my life will be so much better without you!" he shouted, and pointed to the door.

My whole body went numb as it automatically picked itself up. I backed up to the doorway and numbly walked out of his room, tears once again rushing out from my eyes. I went downstairs without looking back. I suddenly knew what I had to do.

"Rachelle?" I heard an unfamiliar voice. I looked up and saw an unfamiliar woman smiling tentatively at me as she stood next to my crying parents.

She startled me by immediately running towards me and hugging me so ever so tightly. I felt warmth envelop me with her hug. I felt a sudden familiarity, as if it was completely natural to hug her back. As if something like this had happened before.

"You are all grown up! Just look at you!” she exclaimed, holding me at arm’s length to get a proper look. She started rambling, “I want to take you with me to New York if you want. I'll respect whatever decision you make in regards to coming or staying. Everything will depend on you. I will not force you to go with me if you don't want. I want that to be very clear to you. If you decide to stay here, I'll just visit you and bring you anything you want. Besides, I can tell that they took good care of you and obviously love you very much." She smiled. I realized that she looked younger than what I thought she would. Her voice sounded sweet as well. I also realized that everyone was waiting for my response with baited breath.

Taking a deep breath, I said, "No. I want to go with you." I heard mom and dad gasp when I spoke. I felt my heartbeat quicken, knowing that I was not just breaking their hearts, but my own as well.

"Why did you change your mind so easily?" Mom asked weakly in a cracked voice.

"I can't stand to live in a house where not everyone accepts me as a part of their family. If I go with Jennifer to New York, at least I can have the feeling of being with someone who is really related to me by blood. At least I’ll know that I’m not an unwelcome addition to her home. Basically what I want is the feeling of family, and I can’t get that here anymore. But Mom, Dad, don't worry because I’ll always come back here to visit you."

I finally turned to look at Jennifer. "Is that okay with you?" I asked her.

"Why yes sweetie! I can book you a flight anytime you want!" She looked really happy with what I said. "I'll just come back tomorrow to pick you up. My agent will be the one to fix your school papers so you can transfer as soon as possible.”

"Okay then,” I said, giving her a slight smile.

"I guess I’d better be going now so you can have time with your parents. Because even though you are not really their daughter, they did a good job in stepping in as your parents. Goodbye sweetie. I'll see you tomorrow." After saying her goodbyes to Mom and Dad, she kissed me on my forehead and I escorted her out. I’ll say one thing; she must be really rich if she has her own limo.

When I came back, my parents were no longer in the living room, so I figured they went upstairs to their master bedroom. I felt like I owed them an explanation for my decision, so I followed the sound of their voices up into their room.

"Mom? Dad?" I said as I walked into their room. My parents turned to look at me, and my mom cut me off before I could even begin explaining my decision.

"Rachelle, are you really sure that you want to go with her?" Mom started asking me. I knew she would start of by asking that first.

"Yes, I am. Believe me, it’s not a decision I make lightly, but it’s what’s best for me right now. Besides, you said she's the only family I have now,” I responded with a heavy heart. The looks on both of their faces weren’t making this any easier for me.

"But we are also your family Rachelle. What made you change your mind? Did Trent say anything that made you change your mind?" she questioned me.

"I don't know. Mom, I love you and Dad. I want to thank you guys for raising me and treating me as your own child. I never in a million years thought that something like this could happen to me. But, Trent. He is your real child. I respect him and his wishes. If he doesn't want me here, then I will not stay here if it bothers him to have me here. Just promise me that you’ll focus on loving and taking good care of him like you have me," I responded.

"What did he tell you to make you decide to leave us?!" Dad asked in a loud tone, moving like he was about to go out and head to Trent's room to demand an explanation. I stepped in front of him, blocking the exit.

"Dad, please don't. My last wish before I leave is that you don't get mad at Trent and treat him as nicely as you can. If you do this for me, I’ll be happy and in peace before I leave. I promise. Just please do it for me. I love you," I stated as I hugged them from behind. I felt his arms sag in defeat, as if his body was weakened with my hug.
