Samuel is a child who has lots of friends, a puppy named Buddy, and a first grade teacher whom he loves. He also has a father with a terrible temper and a mother torn between life in America and the customs and traditions of the kingdom of her birth.
Not wanting to shame her family with divorce, and regretting not marrying the suitor her mother choose for her, Samuel’s mother must come to grips with her life before it destroys her.
In this heartbreaking and compelling story, Samuel tells the story of his family life, interspersed with his mother’s journal entries, which reveal the shame and agony his mother feels and secrets she has kept hidden from her only son.
As tragic as it is heroic, Between a Kingdom and a Country is about the triumph of the human spirit that is bound to stir deep emotions in any reader.
This very short story is about a man who has traveled from Sussex to London in the hope of finding a job. He resides, while searching, in a cafe in London where every morning he searches the paper for job ads. This was a creative writing piece assigned by my English teacher that was written in the span of about an hour. The assignment was to write a culture based piece, be that a poem or a story. British culture is brought into this piece as of the fact that the main character is in London, stereo typically drinking tea and eating crumpets in the hope of appearing more local and approachable, fearing people might be prejudice because he's not originally from London.
Life isn't sweet, but it doesn't have to be completely bitter. It is what we make of it and these poems and stories try to portray just that. That is why I have titled this book Dulces de Coco or Coconut Candies.
This is a combination of the stories and poems that I have written. Many of the pieces in this book are inspired by my childhood, the stories my relatives have told me and my culture.
