PROLOGUE
“I want you to close your eyes, and I want you to imagine a place…” my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Watchacallit, and yeah, I can’t really remember what her name was, so I refer to her as Mrs. Watchacallit. Anyway, my teacher continued, “imagine a place with a lot of different kinds of plants, of every shade of color that you’ve seen in all the plants you’ve ever seen, and more,” she got excited real easy, I guess that’s why I like to do what I do today, she always loved to tell us stories, she spent the entire school day telling us a story, she came up with a new one each day, and this one is the one that got me interested in being a writer.
Ever since that one day so many days, yet not so many days ago, I have wanted to become an amazing story teller, but I can’t tell stories, I always get really nervous in front of other people because I’m so scared that they will shoot down my story and say it’s horrible. So that would be why I write stories, I don’t tell them, but in a way, I guess I do. By the way, my name is Melinda, Melinda Markootschky.
CHAPTER1
“By mom, I’m leaving,” I called to my mom as I grabbed my notepad, pencils, eraser, backpack, and my brain. One more day, I thought excitedly, one more day till I can get away from here, one more day till I can go to my secret place by the lake in the woods! I practically ran out the door to wait for the bus to arrive. I sat down on the curb where the bus stops, and sat, impatiently tapping my pencil against my foot, even though I dreaded going to school.
“Hey!” Cancy called, running down the street to meet me, waving her hand in the air, trying to get my attention, her golden ponytail bobbing up and down with each step she took towards me, I waved back at her. She came to a stop next to me, trying to catch her breath, then said, “How are you?”
I simply repeated, as I do every morning, “I am doing fine,” then I added something that I only add when it’s Friday, “thank Heaven’s it’s Friday,” then I simply decided that I would change the conversation a little bit, make things different, so the day wouldn’t seem as boring, “do you want to come with me to my secret place tomorrow?” I looked at her with pleading eyes, hoping that she would accept my offer, instead of my fear of her saying no.
She nodded as she sat down beside me, her golden ponytail bobbing up and down, “I would love to,” then her bright smile faded, she pointed off in the distance, “What’s that?”
I looked at where she was pointing, and then I looked at her, “Really, Cancy? That’s the school bus!” Then, remembering that my siblings have to be out waiting for the bus as well, I jumped up, ran to my door, threw it open and called for my siblings, “Nikolaus! Andy! Thomas! Harvey! The bus is almost here! Hurry up or you won’t be able to go to school!” I heard the thundering crash of footsteps as my brothers hurried towards the school, the prospect of missing school was something that none of us wanted to even think of. I ran back to Cancy, “Sorry, I had to get my brothers, they love to be extremely slow, like… well, I don’t know how to describe how slow they are!”
“It’s alright,” she paused, thinking to herself, then she continued, “Well, I guess I’ll never know, seeing as I don’t have any siblings.” She chuckled. The boys came stampeding out the front door, they all ran to the bus stop, panting, and very nearly out of breath. Cancy turned her head as the boys arrived and just shook her head. Thomas came to a halt last, near Cancy, and he just stared at her, his dull black hair falling into his deep, dark brown eyes, then Cancy looked him in the eye and said, “What in the world are you staring at?” she smiled as she said this, so it seems as if she was joking, but I know she isn’t, she’s being serious.
Thomas stopped staring and started stuttering, “W-w-well, I-I w-was-sn’t s-s-star-r-ring at y-you, th-that’s f-for su-sure, I-I w-was s-s-s-staring a-at th-the b-b-bus,” he pointed at the bus that was pulling to a stop in front of them. The doors swung open and we crowded onto the already crowded bus. Cancy and I sat next to each other, Harvey sat in the back with Raymor, his best friend, Andy and Nikolaus sat next to each other, and Thomas sat next to Shagery Shankton in the seat behind the seat that Cancy and I were sitting in.
