The next day after school, Kimmi and Naomi went over to Mrs. Storkelson’s house to practice the piano.
When they got there, Naomi sat down on her usual spot on the couch and watched quietly as Kimmi played the piano.
“Very good Kimmi, you are a natural.” Mrs. Storkelson said happily to Kimmi who smiled and then said, “Thank you very much for the complement Mrs. Storkelson. I appreciate the complement. I was wondering, may Naomi take piano lessons too? She loves to listen to classical music and often wishes that she could play the piano just like me.”
“I think that is an excellent idea Kimmi. I don’t mind if Naomi wants to take piano lessons. I will be more than happy to teach both of you.”
“Oh that sounds great. Thank you so much Mrs. Storkelson.”
“You are welcome dear. We’ll let Naomi start her lessons tomorrow when you come over to practice. How does that sound?”
“Oh that is excellent! I can barely wait!” Kimmi said bouncing up and down in her seat.
“Now that is settled then. Let’s celebrate by eating some cookies. I will go get them and be right back.”
Mrs. Storkelson went into the kitchen to get the cookies and Kimmi went back to playing the piano.
Suddenly, Naomi jumped up off the couch and then ran over to Kimmi and gave her a big hug.
“Oh thank you Kimmi for asking Mrs. Storkelson if I could take piano lessons with you. I can barely believe it. I am so happy!”
“I am glad that you are happy Naomi. I knew that you wanted to learn how to play the piano so I asked Mrs. Storkelson if you could start taking classes with me and she agreed. I knew that she wouldn’t have a problem with it.”
“I can’t thank you enough. This is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I can’t wait till tomorrow when I begin my first lesson!”
“I can barely wait too. I am excited for you.” Kimmi said smiling.
Soon, Mrs. Storkelson came walking back into the living room holding the tray of oatmeal raisin cookies saying, “Here we go girls, dig in. I hope you enjoy them.”
“Oh thank you very much Mrs. Storkelson. I love oatmeal raisin cookies. My family eats them all the time.”
“I am glad that you like them Naomi.”
Soon, Kimmi’s piano lesson was over for the day and the two girls left for home.
“See you two girls tomorrow around 4:30. I will be waiting for you.” Mrs. Storkelson said as she waved to Kimmi and Naomi. Afterwards, she went back inside her house.
The next day, Kimmi and Naomi went to school and then went to Mrs. Storkelson’s house to practice the piano.
“Well, hello there girls, do come in. The piano is in its usual place waiting for you.”
“Thank you very much Mrs. Storkelson.” Naomi said as she followed Kimmi inside the house.
“Naomi, would you like to practice first?” Mrs. Storkelson said happily.
“Oh I would love to practice first!” Naomi said as she jumped up and down happily.
Naomi sat down at the piano and then Mrs. Storkelson put a book down in front of her and asked her to play a few simple chords before she went on to play a song,
Naomi obeyed and then played the chords Mrs. Storkelson asked her to.
Soon, she was playing a song and she was so happy.
“You did an excellent job Naomi! For the first time that you ever played the piano, I think you did an excellent job.”
“Thank you very much Mrs. Storkelson. I tried my best.”
Well, you did a great job. I am very proud of you.”
Soon it was time for Kimmi to practice the piano, so Naomi sat down on the couch and listened as her friend played Beethoven’s 3rd symphony.
After she was finished, Naomi and Mrs. Storkelson clapped and cheered Kimmi on. Kimmi just smiled and said thank you.
When the lessons ended, the girls went their separate ways.
When Naomi got home, she told her mother that she had started taking piano lessons with Kimmi and Nalla; Naomi’s mother jumped for joy and then gave Naomi a great big hug.
“I am so proud of you Naomi.” She said.
As the months passed on, Kimmi and Naomi continued to take piano lessons at Mrs. Storkelson’s house. Mrs. Storkelson said that Kimmi and Naomi were the best students that she has ever taught.
2 ½ months later, Westchester High had a music competition against another school. Naomi and Kimmi signed up and won the gold metal for best in the school. They also won The Best Pianist Award and $5,000. Kimmi gave the $5,000 to Naomi.
Naomi decided to use the $5,000 to move her grandparents to America.
Both Naomi’s grandma and grandpa were very happy that the whole Martin family is now living all together in America.
They now live in Naomi’s house.
Kimmi frequently visits them and enjoys the
stories about India that they would tell her.
