was more comfortable, and much easier to fight in. She watched as a wind of her own Magic whirled around her, changing her clothing to those resembling breeches and a long tunic. A brown leather cloak covered her back, the hood of it sitting on her shoulders.
She found she flew much easier with the Fighterâs Gear on than the original Guardianâs Gown. To her surprise, the Grand Magus appeared just as Young Guardian touched down in the Canine Wood.
âWhat are you doing here?â Grand Magus asked her twin.
âIâm to ask the same of you.â Young Guardian responded. âJudging by the look in your eyes, Iâd say youâve had the fright of your life.â
âYou got that right.â Grand Magus explained her strange encounter with both the Goddess Dana and their old agent-friend Jammins.
âWhat does Shadow think of all this?â Young Guardian led her sister on the trail through the Wood.
âHeâs speechless.â Grand Magus supplied, frustrated. âI canât get a word out of him.â
âAmethyst canât get a word out of the Unicorn, either.â Young Guardian told her.
âWhoâs the Unicorn?â
âAaron.â Young Guardian supplied.
âHowâd he get that title?â
âThe same way we got ours.â Young Guardian said. âHe earned it, just as Aimee earned hers of Amethyst.â
âIsnât Amethyst her name anyway?â
Young Guardian was tired of answering.
âIâll explain later. Now, weâre here for business.â Young Guardian announced. She saw her sisterâs shoulders shrug. âAt least, I know I am. I still donât know what youâre doing here.â
âMaybe the Ancients want me to overhear something?â
âI donât know.â Young Guardian sighed. She marched ahead of her sister, dressed in her Fighterâs Gear which resembled those worn by knights in the Middle Ages.
Grand Magus looked down at her own garments. âFine. If she wants comfort, so do I.â
With a wave of her arms, she changed from her flowing indigo robes to black breeches and a billowing indigo top. On her feet were black boots in which, of course, were hidden daggers. At her waist was a belt that had a pouch for her magical stones and a place to hold her wand when she wasnât using it. She still had a velvet cape with her Dream Pentacle attached. She felt over her shoulder for the bow and case of arrows she used in fighting Dominionites and demons in the Dream Realm.
âIf youâre coming, get on with it!â She heard Young Guardian shout.
âFine!â Grand Magus huffed. She met her sisterâs strange look.
âUh, what are you wearing?â Young Guardian was trying not to laugh.
âCan you not see, Young Guardian?â Katherine Hawk-Stargazer remarked with a smile. âShe, too, has a fighting outfit.â
âLaugh all you want, you two.â Grand Magus said sarcastically. âWhat I wear is not our main concern.â
âAye, Shadow came to me, telling of his suspicions.â Katherine remarked. âRumors have spread quickly, affirmed by Tobias himself.â
Young Guardianâs smile faded. âSo, itâs true what they say?â
âOh, aye Young Guardian.â Katherine nodded her feline head. âThe Canine Army is training extra hard for it, too.â
âWill someone let me in on the secret?â Grand Magus spoke up.
âYou mean, Shadow did not tell you?â Katherine was surprised. âGloriana was seen in the Kingdom, and my own cousin Sabrina was caught by Lord Max.â
âThatâs the only thing he did tell me.â Grand Magus remarked. âWhat he didnât tell me is how a lowly Dominionite managed to travel here with what little demon-witchâs magic she had?â
Both Katherine and Young Guardian shrugged, shaking their heads.
âI do know this, though.â Young Guardian announced. âSometime in the near future, weâre going to have a war, and Orthos is going to be deep in the middle of it.â
âHeâs Exiled!â Grand Magus cried. âHowâs he going to get back with all those Ancient Spells blocking him?â
âYouâre the Grand Magus.â Young Guardian grinned. âIâm going to leave it to you to figure out.â She turned to Katherine. âIn the meantime, Iâm to have a word with Wolf and Toby, just to get the records straight.â
âWait a minute.â Grand Magus stopped her sister as she tried to get away with Katherine in tow. âI know that look, and that tone, Young Guardian. You know something I donât about the upcoming war, donât you?â
Young Guardian looked at Katherine before nodding. âThat I do.â
âWeâre supposed to be partners in this.â Grand Magus remarked. âTell me about your dreams.â
âMy, she is persistent.â Katherine remarked.
âNot to mention suddenly observant.â Young Guardian was suspicious.
âI already told you why.â Grand Magus remarked. âNow itâs your turn.â
Young Guardian told her the same thing she told Wolf just nights before. âIn my dreams, there is a war. The Crusaders and Companions, Ancient Mystics and Elders are on our side, fighting against Old Dominionites, Dark Areans, Gloriana and Orthos.â She took a breath. âAccording to my patrols, Orthos hasnât returned yet, but I fear itâll be soon.â
âAnything else, sister?â Grand Magus was interested in her sisterâs dream.
âIn that same dream, Tiger White was in battle, fighting the best he could alongside his canine friends. Toby was by Wolfâs side in another of my dreams, leading other Companions behind them. Somehow, all canines and felines, and every other Companion creatures I saw, were working together against a common cause.â
âSounds to me your own Dream Premonition has a happy ending.â Grand Magus grinned. âEverything will turn out fine, youâll see.â
âNot everything goes as a Dream Premonition says it will.â Katherine supplied, looking at both of them.
âAs usual, youâre right, Katherine.â Grand Magus said. âDo you want me to stay for your âwordâ with Wolf and Toby?â
âOnly if you wish to, Grand Magus.â Katherine said.
âWeâre not making you stay.â Young Guardian remarked. âAfter all, itâs my job to keep the peace around the Dream Realm, not yours.â
âTell us when you get back.â Grand Magus told her sister. âIâm headed for home.â
They waved goodbye as Grand Magus disappeared, happy her own job wasnât as demanding as the Young Guardianâs.
Chapter:
A Witchâs Spell
Amethyst was worried for her twin brother. Both Kelly Reading and her stepbrother Bradley Allen were worried for their father. Even Angel was worried for her once-happy uncle. Most of all, Ariana Reading, Aaronâs best friend, was worried for him.
She and Aimee were sitting at the picnic table in the Readingâs backyard, watching Aaron from yards away. He was sitting under a tree, staring into space. Both Ariana and Aimee tried telepathy on him, but his mind was blocking them out of it.
âThis is so unlike him.â Ariana remarked, sighing. She continued to watch him, sending empathic waves of loving friendship and worry his way. She wouldnât use her Empathy to feel his emotions. âWhy is he blocking us out? I mean, weâre the ones that care about him most, and heâs blocking us out of his mind. I donât get it.â
âMe, neither.â Aimee stared at her brother with Ariana. âWeâre the Three Musketeers. Weâve been there for him when others couldnât, or wouldnât. The Crusaders have helped him conquer the Dark Unicorn Magic in his soul.â
âSomehow, I donât think that matters to him anymore.â Ariana said softly, keeping her silver-blue eyes on the sad-looking Aaron Theodore across the yard.
Aimee sighed. âI donât think anything does.â
âSomething does, Iâm sure of it.â Ariana said, finally turning to Aimee. âI have a feeling it has to do with his trip to the Dream Realm.â
Aimee nodded. âMe, too.â She said. âBesides his lack of voice, heâs physically fine. For the past week, heâs taken walks without letting anyone knowing where heâs going.â
âMaybe heâs searching for something?â Ariana asked.
âWhat for, though?â
âWhatever took his voice, forcing him into seclusion.â Ariana told her simply.
âWhat are you suggesting?â Aimee wondered.
Ariana stared at the solemn man that sat under a backyard tree. She tried to reach for him in her mind, the way they used to as children, but he blocked her off. Again.
She thought back to a week ago, when they shared a single, solitary kiss. âI think that kiss we shared told him something.â
Aimee grinned. âOh, do tell.â
âWeâve changed a lot in the past year, and heâs finally feeling it.â Ariana said.
âOkay, Iâm confused.â Aimee responded. âExplain.â
âRemember what Omri did to us?â Ariana began. Aimee nodded, so she continued. âHe made me really think of Aaronâs and my relationship. He uncovered what was hidden beneath the surface.â
âI wish there was something we could do to help him get over you.â Aimee remarked.
Ariana grinned after a moment. âThere may just be.â She stood. âFollow me.â
âWhere are we going?â Aimee asked. âWhat about the kids?â
âJuliet will take care of them.â Ariana grabbed her almost-sisterâs hand. âCome on. Youâre going to meet a very powerful friend of mine.â
Aimee gave her a confused look.
After telling Juliet sheâd be back in a little while, Ariana drove across town with Aimee to visit an old friend.

Aaron noticed when his twin left with Ariana and sighed to himself. The woman in his dreams was haunting him again. Her face, her voice in his mind, her laughing eyes and beautiful smile. He couldnât get the black-haired woman with the dual-colored eyes out of his mind. Coming back to the present and standing up, he headed into the Readingâs house to check on the kids.
Might as well do something useful while Iâm here. Aaron thought to himself.
âHello, Aaron.â Came a gentle female voice from the other room. Heâd entered through the back and hadnât seen the Readingâs live-in Caretaker, Juliet Grey. âWhat can I do for you?â
He knew sheâd be hysterical if he tried telepathy on her, so he just shook his head.
âNothing?â Juliet asked, worried. âAre you sure?â
He nodded, then found a pencil and a piece of paper to write on. He wrote. âI canât talk. Where did Ariana go?â
âShe went to a friendâs house with Aimee.â Juliet said. Concerned, she felt his head. âAre you sure youâre okay? You look a little pale.â
He jumped back, as Julietâs hands felt warm, almost hot to the touch.
Aaron felt his cheeks. They were cool, and he remembered why. Heâd used some of his own Unicorn Magic to block both his sister and Ariana out of his mind and emotions. They were worried, but he couldnât have them poking around to find out whatâs wrong with him. He was a little dizzy, now that he thought about it.
Juliet seemed to know what to do. âYou sit down and Iâll fix you a sandwich.â
Aaron nodded. Good idea, he thought. He nodded his thanks.
Daddy? He heard his daughter Kellyâs voice in his mind, but didnât dare block it. If you need me to heal you, just call me.
Iâll be fine after a sandwich, honey. Aaron relayed to her. Thank you anyway.
Her presence stayed in his mind for a moment before saying anything else. Donât hurt Momma, okay?
Hurt her? I would never hurt her. Aaron assured her. His temples began to pulse, and his head was hurting from the telepathic conversation.
Kelly knew and soothed it with thoughts. Thatâs how she feels when you block her out. Aimee, too.
No. Impossible. I could never hurt your mother. Aaron shook his head in disagreement. Never.
He never realized until now what he did to his best friend and twin by blocking them out.
Iâve had a lot on my mind lately, Kelly. Aaron relayed. I never mean to hurt her. I love her too much for that.
I know you do, but she doesnât love you in the same way. Kelly responded. She has Derrick, her Earthly Protector, to watch over her and love her. She doesnât need
