Chapter 1
I am a rogue in this territory, a lone wolf. I am an outcast. I run and run, my paws hitting the dirt, making me go faster. I smell him, the one, his scent drives me crazy, drives me to keep going. Am I going north? Maybe west, I donât know. I am closer; Iâm a blind bat only relying on scent and wind. After a while I feel like I am floating. I see a city in the distance, the smell of gasoline; people and coffee stop me in my tracks. Damn I think. It will be hard going in as a wolf. I have to change, I think of being human and it begins. One minute I am a wolf, the next I am human in all my glory. I rub dirt various places on my cheeks and other parts and I head toward the city. I see the bright green neon sign that reads Charleston pop: 500.i sees a cottage nice light brown and modern .I walk into it âmy goodness child are you alrightâ a motherly southern accent asks. âYes Iâm fine, I got lost in the woods campingâ I say in a hoarse voice thanks to my recent change. âWell letâs get you some clothesâ she said kindly. She walked behind the desk and disappears under it, she pops back up with a black shirt and a pair of jeans âI hope these fitâ she said kindly. She asks what my name is âMayâ I say âMay Carnoldâ
Sheâs here he thought as he snapped up. Who? He had no idea, he smelled her, the sweet smell of lavender and vanilla left a slight trace in his nose. She isnât close he thought but sheâs here. He shook his head âgod Iâm losing itâ he said. He followed his regular routine brushed his teeth, took a shower, had his coffee and went to work. Working at a B and B at the edge of town has its advantages, easy access to the woods and not too many people. As he neared his job he smelled it again, that damn smell. Lavender and vanilla protruded his nose almost making him have an accident. No he told himself you will not follow it! He parked in the employee parking lot, the smell almost strong enough to make him go to sleep. DAMMIT! YOU ARE AN ALPHA THIS IS NOTHING! He got out the car and shook himself off. MAXWELL BOYD SCOTT, you will stop this RIGHT NOW!! He shook his head one more time and went into the small cottage and was so overwhelmed with the strong smell of lavender he fell to his knees.
She smelled it again, that smoky spicy smell she inhaled deeply and smiled. Heâs here, heâs coming! She thought âwe have 2 more workers here so you wonât just be stuck with meâ ellie said. I smiled âthat wouldnât be bad at allâ. I heard the squeak of the tires and made a low warning growl. He came in, overwhelming her with the smell of wood and spice, so much so that the both fell on their knees.
Chapter 2
They were both facing each other. She studied him, took in his golden curls and deep blue eyes specked with gold now that his wolf was so close. He had a lean build, but that was normal for all male wolves. He took her in too; she knew what he would see. Violet eyes with specks of gold, long red straight hair average chested and average height. âOh my goodnessâ ellie said casually as if everyday people knelt in her cottage. âMax, may are you guys ok?â max took a few more breaths and answered never taking his gaze off her âsorry for the scene ellieâ he said, god he had a voice like music. I cleared my throat and got up, I straightened my shirt and looked at ellie and said âI am so sorry⊠where Iâm from you kneel to new people didnât know max is it knew thatâ. Ellie looked at max then me âoh well its okâ she said and turned around and went upstairs. Slowly I turned around and met his deep blue gaze. We stood in silence until I was annoyed. âWell? Arenât you going to introduce yourselfâ I said. He raised one eyebrow but answered âI am Maxwell Scott, alpha of the Charleston pack, and you are...â so heâs an alpha I thought. â I am May Carnold, alpha of the water ridge packâ I said with a smirk. He cocked his head to the side but said in a strong voice âwhat are you doing in my territory, alpha?â
âOh I think you knowâ
âNo I donâtâ
âokay, okay whatever you say, you can try to pretend that my scent isnât branded into your mind or that you werenât just handicapped by my scent a few seconds agoâ I heard him grind his teeth. âI thought that is how you greet newcomersâ he said in a wolfish grin. âUgh must we play games Iâve traveled quite a distance because I smelled you, sometimes I wish I never had a good nose anyw-â
âEnoughâ he said in his alpha voice.
âNo I donât think so, you will not and CAN not command ME like a puppyâ she said putting in full force alpha.
âI believe I can you are in MY territory amongst MY people, so May we are mates, I do not wish to claim you nor will I-â
â no you wonât I just wanted to see how the picture would look compared to the smell but now that I see, and am very disappointed, I will leave nowâ she said casually.
Ouch, he thought, that was just cruel. âWhat do you mean you are disappointedâ he said showing a little bit of hurt. âI wasnât expecting an alpha, nor was I expecting you to be this⊠quietâ she said as she passed. She walked into the woods and when she thought she was hidden she stripped. She was beautiful from her hair to her eyes all the way down to her toes. She changed into a white wolf and as if she sensed him she turned around and gave him a curt nod and started sprinting south. She ran here? Oh it doesnât matter he told himself it wouldâve just been trouble. He went behind the counter and sat, he expected her back anytime soon, and no women he had met that were his kin had ever been able to resist him. He waited and waited, he had a chat with ellie e about the ârogueâ he knew she had felt strongly about the territory and the packs safety, he changed the sheets on the bed, he even washed! She still didnât come back damn he thought I was so close to her!
Chapter 3
âWell that was a surpriseâ her second bailey told her âI wake up make breakfast and call you down only to find your not there!â she said with a huff. âI know I know Iâm sorry his scent drew me crazyâ I said exasperated âugh, b, he was âoh my god get me a chair Iâm gonna faintâ hot he was an alpha though it never would have worked. He didnât want to claim me and now quite frankly I donât want him too. She looked at me in shock âhe, he refused you?â she said dumbfounded. âYeah I know right, never heard of that happening, but I didnât argue although it did ticked me off, I leftâ stuck up s.o.b he was she thought. âSo where did you find him?â she asked interested. âCharlestonâ I said soberly âCharleston?! Where is that?â
âI have no idea, somewhere northâ
âWoowâ she said sighing
âYep well Iâm going to bed, couldnât get any sleep last night, the pack will be here at around 5:00 wake me up at 4â
âSure mayâ she said with a smile.
I walked upstairs, peeled off everything except for my bra and panties although I contemplated it. She slipped into bed and closed her eyes thinking finally a rest. She fell asleep and wasnât taunted by the lingering smell of wood and spice.
She really isnât coming back, he thought âah well sheâll go crazy soon enoughâ he said dismissively to himself. He drive back to his house and made chicken parmigian, enough to feed an army he thought and set the plates. His pack would be coming soon and only a foolish person wouldnât prepare a meal.âIâm hereâ Lucyâs musical voice sung. âAnd weâre hungryâ Dan and don said together. Lucy came in first with her short stature and amber hair. âMmmmmâ she said sniffing the air âchicken parm, yummy yummyâ she said rubbing her stomach, for a 23 year old she could act like a child at times. âYeahâ Dan said âyummy yummyâ his twin said in a mock girl voice. Before I could comment a deep voice followed by low murmurs said âweâre hungry and smell food, wither someoneâs doing something right or Iâm having hallucinationsâ. I smiled and put the food on the table âFOODS IN HERE HELP YOURSELF BEFORE ITS GONE!!â I enjoyed doing this, to see who could be faster, so far Lucy always won. When everybody was at the table eating the only noise was the fork scraping the plate and low murmurs exchanged, I decided to come out with it â I found my mate today at work but rejected her and she hasnât come backâ I said in such a low voice only the mice in the attic could hereâŠ. Yeah right. Forks dropped, mouths stopped moving and eyes turned on him. I am screwed he thought slowly.
Chapter 4
She was awoken by the smell of fried chicken cooking âcrapâ as she saw it was 4:30, bailey she thought. She threw on some Levis and a midnight blue button down. She combed her hair and walked downstairs. âwhat part of âwake me up at 4 donât you understandâ I said angrily ââ well if you want a pack of hungry wolves on your hands, Iâm sorryâ she said from the stove not even turning around. I smiled only she could get away with stuff like that I thought⊠sometimes. I set up the table with my favorite decorative plates and plastic cups. Bialy put the food on the table just as the pack came in. âplease tell me thatâs food and not my imaginationâ Suzy said, â if it is Iâm imagining the same thingâ Will her mate said, âluckyâ she grunted under her breath. âMmmmmâ Arthurs booming voice said âis that a good ole fashioned southern meal I smellâ he said attempting, and not succeeding, a southern accent. âwhy yes it is, bailey and little ole me have been slaving this hot oily stoveâ I said in my southern damsel in distress voice putting a hand on my forehead dramatically. âugh, enough play letâs eatâ Arthur said rubbing his hands together as the rest of the pack came in, everybody was seated, reaching for the chicken, until bailey my trusted companion came out with it. âMay went to Charleston, found her mate, he rejected her and she came back at 11:00â she ended with an inhale. everybody stopped reaching for the chicken and everybody stared at me. âHe did what?â will asked incredelously âhe canât do that, itâs impossibleâ said her voice squeaking. âWell one, thank you bailey that was very nice of youâ I said giving her the âyou will payâ look. âSecondly he did, itâs over now, and I didnât buy all this chicken just for it to get coldâ
