“I know you loved your brother, but I think we need to leave. You avenged him, and altogether it is very poignant. Millennia, I am truly sorry for your loss. I implore you to come with me so we can get the hell out of here, however, I understand how bad this hurts. Stay here as long as you need. Me and the others will clear the rest of their stronghold before it is too late.” She stayed for a brief instant before finally leaving me alone with Kaire’s corpse. It was just the body lying in my arms, and then there was me. A non-moving lycan that was refusing to admit to what had happened in the last ten minutes. For the hunter to kill, one must make sacrifices that can break the heart.
“I love you brother,” I said. Gently placing his upper body and head on the floor, I stretched my legs and began to walk away. There were still a few more of Hamilton’s friends that were responsible for despondency of my friends and new found allies. Everyone would pay for their mistakes. Hurting the innocent does nothing but build a stockpile of enemies.
Long past the moment when I had lost all hope in Kaire coming back, I looked at his body one last time. With my lost heart in tow, I headed for the door. Anguish had its way of overwhelming me at times, but it never hurt as bad as this. It felt as if I was stranded on a desolate island, knowing that everyone that I have ever loved is long past dead. I far beyond the ability to be repaired. Never did I meet my parents, but I am certain that they died a long time ago. Kaire just passed on fifteen minutes ago. Love was so dangerous, but it was not the reason why my family was killed. Kaire died protecting me while me parents could still be alive somewhere looking for us.
My hand was just beginning to grasp the brass handle of the door when a voice called out to me.
“Wait.”
This is only the Beginning
Bold and smooth as honey, a sound I had always known since I was a pup. The voice that called out was the last one that I had expected to hear. Yet, there I was. Staring at the origin of a beautiful voice that I recognized instantly. I had known it since I was little, and now I could listen to it again. It went against any form of logic that I had held, he was supposed to be dead. My mind began to wonder to a far off dimension when I thought, what if this is the last time I will hear this voice again? Once I thought it, I ran for the voice’s origin and I hugged it with all my strength. The tan, olive skin was smoother than silk, and his lengthy black hair brushed against my neck. He was in desperate need of a bath, and a haircut.
“Okay, that hurts. Loosen up just a little please,” he pleaded. "I may be bigger but you, for sure, are pretty strong." We stood there for a minute, listening to one another breathe. He was bigger than me by just a little bit, yet I was certain that I was older. Being older did not always mean that I would have the superior height, that would take a long time to get used to.
“I am never letting go of you. Not for one moment, not ever,” I whispered, knowing he would hear me. He tried to unravel my arms and failed in the process. He had just died and was revived, just like I had. If only I could have not been there, it was painful to watch.
“I’m okay, it’s okay. I haven’t given up the ghost just yet. Now, come on, I need to breathe you know,” he added. Smiling, I felt more tears slide down my still red cheeks. “Don’t cry, everything is fine.”
“I know, I just thought I would never see you again. I am begging you to never let that happen again,” I said with my voice cracking because of the tears streaming down my face. Begging would do no good, he had no control over the future and even then he was willing to risk everything for just one thing, me.
“Kaire, did that happen to me?” I asked. He shook his head warily.
“No, you slipped into a coma. You did die like I did though, but you were way less dramatic when you slipped under. And to be really dead honest, I thought I was going to die perpetually.” I smiled, we both had wanted ot die after a bite like that. The toxin was full of agony and suffering but at least we came out okay. Somewhat. It transformed us into monsters of the night that have two completely different "
“You were out a good fifteen to twenty minutes,” I responded quickly. Kaire yawned and look back at me. “You are not allowed to sleep until I am sure you won’t be dying anytime soon.”
“Since when are you my boss?” he questioned jokingly. I missed his wise cracking personality so much within the last twenty minutes it was like he had been dead for thirty years.
“Let me see, since I was born first,” I snapped, hinting at my sarcasm.
“Supposedly, born first. We are twins, no one is on hundred percent sure who was first,” Kaire corrected with a smart ass tone.
Once Kaire finally had some real clothes on, we headed for the door. Nothing was going to stop us now. Together, we felt stronger and faster. Almost like now that we both were lycans, our powers combined into one big giant mess as if we were one being. I guess twins can be twins. But something felt missing from the two of us, like there was a third piece to our complex puzzle we had built for us from birth. There was still so much more to learn and discover, there was a whole world ahead of us. We would have to wait, however, because time would only tell us where we would go. And everything that we had yet to find, I could feel that I was not going to be happy with the end results. It's just a feeling though.
The brass handle turned easily as the door gradually creaked open with protest. Everything was over and completed. Emberlynn was back and we had friends at our sides. I got to see my original wolf pack again, and Zeke agreed to give me some of his large, expansive territory as an area to keep my own pack. Lycans were not well behaved as loners, but I respected the opinions of those who left, but there were many of the lycans from Hamilton’s pack that wanted to stay with Kaire and me. Nothing could have been better than that.
Together we stood, everyone that was in refuge or emprisoned within the compound. We would stay here and call this place our home for as long as possible. Fight if we must, but we were all finally together. The Lakes got their precious Emberlynn back, my wolf pack did not want me dead, I got my Mathias, and Kaire was alive. Even now it amazes me that I lead my own pack. It was more of a group really, being composed of humans, wolves, and lycans. There were so many of us, and none of us wanted the other dead. United, that's the word humans used for this. We were united.
I thought everything was over, that maybe the world would lay off my back for once. How exceptionally wrong I was about that, because there was more to come. New troubles and more death, so much more death. It was never over.
This is only the beginning of my end.
