"Good thinking." I finished with my boots and then focused on him.

His HP had risen significantly during the months that we'd trained, but what made me feel even safer was his respectable Physical and Magic Defense.
There was something about both scores being above two hundred that gave me confidence we'd be okay if any battles found us. Coupled with the fact that even if he did become incapacitated, he'd just be retrieved by the orb I was carrying and taken to a place where he could rest and heal, I was feeling more ready than ever. His MP pool also jumped significantly, especially because of his D-grade robes. His two buffs would cost eighty mana for all four of us, which meant he'd have enough mana to cast multiple heals back-to-back if it came to that.
From what he'd shown me, his normal healing spell cost only 22 MP, his hastened one 32 MP, and his group healing 43 MP. With him healing us, I don't think we'd have any issues with any E-graders, no matter how many of them attacked us. It made me wonder what class would he adopt once we did our class-upgrade quests with Leo.
I was sure I'd get some kind of advanced fighter class, probably a damage-dealer if my previous raging battle was any clue. Leo would definitely get a stronger damage-oriented spellcaster class, but Louie was still a mystery to me. He'd usually taken a supporting role in our training and battles so far, but his spells dealt just as much damage, if not more, than Leo's.
"You've got 188 attack," Louie said, excitement coloring his voice. "That's very cool, right?"
"I do?" I said and pulled up my status screen.

"It is pretty cool," I agreed. "I went from 57 Physical Attack to 188. That's a massive jump."
"You're still way behind Rory though," he said. "He had 287 when he was buffed."
"He's already done his second class-upgrade quest at level 40," I said. "And anyway, Rory's class isn't a damage-dealing one. But he had something like three thousand HP."
"Oh, I remember that. We all had an HP-boosting buff though. Too bad we can't have any good buffs on us this time."
"Well, let's hope we won't need them," I said and lay down on the couch, Louie promptly jumping up next to me. "I think we've got quite a few hours to rest before leaving, right?"
"We can all rest for at least eight hours," Viki replied, still standing by the window. "I can wake you up if you want to sleep."
"Don't mind if I do," I said, and closed my eyes.
It was weird how rapidly honesty could change the disposition we had toward people. A couple of hours ago, I wouldn't have trusted the doppelgänger enough to let her go to the bathroom alone, but here I was now about to fall asleep while she stood next to me, fully equipped.
Now she was Viki, an ally in need of help. And all that because we shared a common enemy that was holding hostage people we cared about. That and a magical lie detector test by our friendly dragon in an orb.
"Are you just gonna go to sleep?" Louie said in my head. "She must be stressed out of her mind right now."
"It's not like we're completely cool about rushing into our enemy's lair either, Louie," I replied telepathically, "but we need our bodies rested and our minds sharp. Just try to sleep."
"At least tell her something to ease her mind," he insisted.
"Come on, man. You know I'm not good at these things. It will sound forced."
"I'm not a man," he said, and growled softly.
I sighed and opened my eyes.
"Say, Viki?" I said out loud and she turned to look at me. "What are you going to do once we rescue your wife?"
She didn't reply immediately and turned toward the window again.
"There is a little village in the Dachstein Mountains of Austria," she said finally, and this time didn't bother hiding her smile. "Hallstatt. That's where her family comes from originally. We've never been there, but we've seen pictures and it's beautiful. Out of reach from giants. A village full of our people. And the most beautiful lake you've ever seen."
"Austria sounds like a lovely place," Louie added.
"I kept putting it off," she said, something in her voice sounding more melancholic now. "Every year we were supposed to go, and every year something would happen and we'd reschedule. Don't do that." She turned back suddenly to look at us. "Don't reschedule. Just do."
I didn't reply but I nodded in understanding. I had learned this lesson all too well.
"Perhaps we'll come along," Louie said enthusiastically. "I hear they have great sausages there, Alex."
"Perhaps we will, buddy," I said and ruffled the top of his head.
"Rest well, Viki," Louie said.
"You too, guys," she said and finally sat on the floor, her eyes closed and legs crossed as if meditating.
"We will if this fucking tractor stops groaning," I said and threw one of the couch pillows at Rory who was snoring as loudly as ever. "Go to the room, you old horse."
"Piss off," he replied and turned to the side, now using the pillow I'd just hit him with. "Why don't ye go to your room, if yer ears are so tender?"
Why don't
