be impolite she nodded. Just as they had made it to the dance floor, they heard a scream from what sounded like a girl. Everyone paused as if to listen for something else, but nothing followed. As the music started up again, another yell of worry, this time, from a boy. Then nothing. By this time everyone was scared and a little nervous. As the music started once again all four of the girls stopped short as a voice sounded in their heads. Soon followed by another yell, this time, for help. The girl’s partners looked at them suspiciously then escorted them to the side. Quickly taking action after the last scream, the guards and men at the party drew their swords and ran out to the gardens. As some guards came and surrounded the king and queen, Kaliea and the other girls took flight and followed the men out the doors and into the garden.
“COLLIN!” A voice screamed hysterically out of the darkness. The four girls froze.
“You guys heard the voice in the ballroom too?” Simolia asked hesitantly.
“Yeah, it sounded a little like...” Aralina paused then continued, “Katalia.”
The others nodded, for they too thought it sounded a lot like their beloved friend. The four quickly flew to one of the paths, and soon found Prince Collin standing like a statue, with his face turning a bluish color. He had silver dust all over his head and shoulders.
a little while before, what Katalia was doing....
Katalia was hot. She had danced every single dance, and was tired. She glanced up at Prince Collin, who was also looking very tired. They had stopped their conversation a while ago, since talking only helped to tire them out. Prince Collin bent forward and whispered,
“You are red in the face. Is something wrong, or is it hot?”
“It’s hot in here,” whispered Katalia.
“Would you like to step into the garden? It’s cooler there,” said the prince.
“That’s fine with me. I don’t want to dance again until my lessons next week,” said Katalia.
The prince laughed, and guided her through the doors to the garden, and through the corner of her eyes, Katalia could see all of her friends giving her thumbs up. She smiled at them, then laughed, as she saw her brother almost run up to Aralina, and ask her for a dance. She laughed even harder, when Aralina’s face took on surprise, and Megdelia practically push her into the young man’s arms.
“What are you laughing at?” Prince Collin asked.
“Oh, my friends. They are quite funny,” said Katalia, waving her hand in the direction in which her friends were, as it would be rude to point.
The prince looked over, in time to see Aralina being led onto the floor.
“What’s so funny about that?” he asked.
“Oh, you missed it. Aralina fell into my brother’s arms. Because my other friend pushed her,” Katalia said, laughing.
By now, they were in the garden. The two kids walked around the garden. They sat down on a stone bench, and the prince asked Katalia what was going on with her family, and how everything was. She made a split second decision to tell him about what was going on.
“And my uncle wants me to marry my cousin, and if I do, I’ll have to live with them both, and my uncle won’t take care of my people! What do you think I should do?” Katalia finished.
“That leaves you with one choice,” said the prince, looking down on his lap.
Katalia knew what he meant. He was the only prince in the adjoining kingdoms. That meant that the fate of her people laid in the hands of this prince. If he chooses to marry her, then the people would be saved. If he didn’t, then her people would end up dying, at the hand of her blood seeking uncle. If only her brother was older than her, the responsibility would be on his shoulders, not Katalia’s. And there were many princesses. Whereas, the only other prince than her brother, was Collin.
“I think that I need time to think,” said the prince, “Let’s just say that we are courting, Katalia, and I can figure it out later.”
Katalia nodded, and bit her lip. She was worried that he might think that she was mediocre, and would turn her down, in order to get a better wife.
“You can call me Kat. My parents do, and it is so much easier to say.”
“Ok, Kat.” The prince turned, and picked a flower to give to the princess. But in the moment that he turned, everything went horribly wrong.
Katalia felt as if her limbs had turned to stone. She couldn’t move anything except her eyes. She looked around to her left, and saw her uncle standing there, silent as a statue, and holding what looked like sparkly dust in his hands. Prince Collin hadn’t noticed that anything had happened, until he turned to face Katalia. She saw him stop, then turn to Darius, and pull out his sword.
Katalia tried to scream for help, because she knew that Collin could not take the magician by himself, but no sound came out. Her lips were glued shut. She couldn’t even breathe.

Darius stepped toward the princess, with his knife out. He knew that if his niece was in danger, the loyal prince wouldn’t attack. He pointed his knife to her throat, and watched as the girl’s eyes widened, and the boy’s sword tip go down. Darius noticed that Katalia’s face was turning a bit blue, and remembered that she couldn’t breathe. He blew his magic dust off of her, and onto the prince.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Katalia drew in one huge, shaky breath, then screamed as loudly as she could. Before her uncle could move to stop her, she blew the dust off of Collin. Collin started to move forward, but when Darius dug his knife deeper, making a small line of blood appear on Katalia’s throat, he stopped. Katalia reached up, and pinched her uncle hard, making him drop the knife. Collin reached for her, and caught one of her arms, and pulled her behind him. Katalia stumbled on the edge of her gown, and fell down. She was about to get up and run for help, when she noticed that Darius was using magic. She read her uncle’s mind, and found where he was aiming magic. He was aiming for Collin. She pushed the prince out of the way, and got hit, full in the chest with the magic. She fell, and Collin caught her. Katalia felt tingling sensations running up and down her body, and everything seemed to have a fuzzy tinge. She started to lose consciousness. She heard Collin yelling at her to stay conscious, but it was hard. She tried desperately to keep her eyes open. Suddenly, everything was different. Uncle Darius had disappeared, and Collin was yelling for help, and sitting on the ground with her head in his hands.
“Collin?” she asked, “Why can I not move anything?”
It was true. She couldn’t move her arms and legs. Her brain and head were working fine though. She sent a message to her friends for help. Then Collin answered.
“I don’t know, Katalia,” he said.
“Kat.”
“Kat.” he replied, with a small smile.
“Where is Uncle Darius?”
“I don’t know. He just disappeared.”
“Do you understand now what I mean about him and my people, Collin?”
“Yes.”
“My uncle is near. I can feel it.”
“Katalia, I will think about your people’s problems, and I will try to fix them in whatever way I can.”
“Thanks, Collin.”
“Isn’t this a touching exchange,” came a cold, cruel voice, “I almost don’t want to end it.”
It was Darius. He stepped up behind Collin, and before the prince could react, the magician pushed him aside, and dragged the princess to her feet, while he pulled out a small bag of his magical dust.
Collin stood, and grabbed his sword, which he had dropped, in order to catch Katalia. He stepped toward the magician, just in time to get a face full of magic dust. In front of him, he heard Katalia scream his name, and saw Darius pour some dust on her, and she stood still, as if she were a statue. There was a flash of red light, and then they were gone.
BACK TO THE PRESENT...
“Oh my goodness. What are we going to do?” Megdelia asked fluttering back and forth. The girls watched as her wings stirred the dust on the prince. At one point his nose turned to its original color. The girls looked at eachother then turned to Megdelia.
“FLAP YOUR WINGS!” The three yelled in unison.
Megdelia looked confused, but her friends didn’t have time to explain. They just aimed her in the right direction and she flapped like she had never flapped before in her life. Soon her friends were yelling at her to stop. She turned and saw that her flapping uncovered the prince so now he went from having not enough air to more air then could be possible for a person to breath.
“Oh, I am so sorry Prince Collin!” Megdelia exclaimed.
“It’s all right. But where is Kat?”
“Kat?” the three asked.
“Well it’s easier to say then Katalia.” he explained then started to move toward the woods that surrounded the garden. The girls started to follow, anxious to help.
“Where are you going?” The King shouted, as he approached the group while being surrounded by guards.
“We were just about to look for the princess.” Collin answered.
“Oh, no you are not!” the King declared. “I have guards for that! And besides, all people at the ball have been placed under house arrest.”
“What!?” All five exclaimed in confusion.
“Come with me and I will explain.” As they reached one of the hallways inside of the palace the king turned to his ensemble and ordered them to go to the different ends of the hall so that they could have at least a little privacy.
He then lowered his voice, “My secret police seem to think that there is a spy in our midst, which is how my brother knew the exact time to hit. And because of that threat, they want anyone that is here to remain here until further notice!”
“Couldn’t the spy had left during the commotion like we did?” Kaliea asked.
“He could have, but the guards outside would have noticed, and since all guests have been accounted for they sincerely doubt it.” He paused, but the group could tell he wasn’t done with what he had to say, “Now I want you five to find my son, who is in the library, and stay there until further notice!”

Katalia opened her eyes. She was in a long dark room, that smelled awfully strange.
“Are you awake your majesty?” a timid voice asked from the other side of the room.
“I think so. This is not a dream is it?” she answered back.
