but each other.

"The wound runs deep, Alexander," Ed said, finally breaking the silence. "And, as trite as it may sound, what doesn't kill you ultimately makes you stronger."

A warm light enveloped both me and Louie, in much the same way as when I was showered with a healing spell. Only this time it felt as if I was standing beneath a waterfall of light. Both Louie and I looked at ourselves and each other as our limbs took on a glow of their own, and the light started shrinking until it disappeared into my temples and Louie's belly.

Do you accept the quest? Yes No

I mentally accepted the quest and stood up, looking at the bearded man. He was wearing a smile of satisfaction and compassion.

"It was an absolute pleasure hearing your story, Alexander," he said. "I sincerely hope you can grow from this. You're not alone anymore, or at least you won't be pretty soon."

"Thank you," I said and stood up to shake his hand. "Is there something I can do to repay you?"

"You have done enough," he said and gripped my hand, his shake a lot firmer than I had expected. "And I think I've had enough of this place as well. I think I'll take my leave too. Yes, perhaps somewhere a little more... sunny."

"Wait, you mean this isn't what you normally do?" Louie asked.

"Oh, most definitely not," the man replied and twirled his mustache. "I'm just doing a favor for the Faery Queen. She and I are old friends, and I owe her from that time when... Oh my, I almost let that one slip. Now that I think of it, there is something you can do to help me."

"Of course," I said and nodded at him. "What would you have me do?"

"Just tell the Faery Queen to send a replacement," he said and grinned a wide smile. "You know how tedious arranging a meeting with a goddess can be when done at short notice."

"We'll gladly do that," Louie agreed on my behalf.

"In that case, Alexander Rage, Louie Thunder, Rory Battleforge, Viki Anthur," he said, looking at each of us in turn. "I bid you all farewell. May your stories fill many more pages in your lives' books."

With that final salute, Ed Greenwood, the level 71 Reality Weaver, pulled his hood up. His face disappeared into the shadow and he raised his hand, pointing behind us.

All four of us immediately turned to face whatever was about to attack us from behind, the memory of the Caecus Malum still fresh in our minds. But we saw only our own shadows, cast by the bonfire on the trees. I unsheathed my swords and held my breath, listening for any movement. It took me much longer than I care to admit, but finally I understood what had happened. I turned around to see the campfire still going strong, but Ed had disappeared. In his place was a metal cylinder.

"Did he just pull a disappearing act?" I asked, not quite able to believe we'd fallen for it.

"Level 71 spellcaster," Rory said, barely keeping himself from bursting into laughter, "and he got us with a child's trick."

"I liked him," Louie said and moved toward the cylinder, sniffing it. "Hey, this thing smells like sausage."

"People like him," said the doppelgänger, who had been silent so far, "are not to be liked or disliked. You should just steer away from them. We're nothing but insects to them."

"Ye're a scaredy-cat, aren't ye, doppelface?"

The woman didn't say anything and focused her eyes on the fire. I followed her gaze and realized a portal had opened between the now dwindling flames.

"Shall we go then?" I asked. "Same order."

"Guys, this thing really smells like sausage," Louie insisted.

"What are you talking about?" I said and picked the cylinder up. "Oh, it's hollow. Can't smell anything though."

"Then I guess this is the last quest item ye need," Rory said. "I get a good vibe from the other side of this portal but it can't hurt to go in buffed."

He looked at Louie, who obliged.

Having received his buffs, Rory jumped into the flames as Louie buffed himself and me. The doppelgänger followed Rory, and a few seconds later, Louie hovered through as well. I took a last deep breath of the air from the realm of eternal night and threw myself into the final stop of our quest.

You're not alone

I was expecting we'd appear somewhere in the palace of the Faery Queen but instead, I felt like I was falling down an endless pit, walls of light surrounding me. I tried to look for Louie but couldn't see him anywhere.

Despite the fact I was falling at a speed that increased with every passing second, there was no wind on my face. It was as if I was floating and my surroundings were simply moving faster and faster around me. The translucent colorful walls of the pit eventually merged into an ever-changing rainbow as I traveled to what I hoped would be the final branch of our journey in the lands of the faeries.

I was still shaken by the fact that I'd shared Rhiannon's story with Louie, much less Rory and two strangers, but I didn't regret it. It was time for me to confess my secret. I should have done it years ago. It felt as
