at his excitement and let the sausage float again as she started manipulating the lotus and the orb. She placed the smoking sphere underneath the lotus and the flower sucked all of the smoke out of it, its petals gradually adopting a darker color. This process lasted at least half a minute, during which the orb became almost transparent and looked more like a glass sphere while the flower opened and sizzled as if being fried.

The throne room was now filled with a very familiar smell. One that Louie was extremely quick to pick up, his neck stretched as high as possible and his nose sniffing greedily.

"Is that what I think it is?" Louie exclaimed, as the orb fell to the floor and the flower morphed into a perfectly cooked, thick, and juicy slice of bacon.

Before I was able to inspect it, the slice wrapped itself around the sausage and let out a soft glow as they merged into one divine piece of deliciousness.

Item: Berner Würstel of Soul Entanglement

Type: Quest Item

Durability: 1/1

Grade: A Grade

Weight: 120st.

Description: The ultimate meaty delight gifted by the Goddess of Faeries herself. This little piece of heaven will forever join two spirits into one.

"What?" Louie practically shouted between jumps, trying to reach the bacon-wrapped sausage.

On his third try, he had calmed himself enough to cast his levitation spell and managed to grab the sausage and bring it down with him. He took a small nibble at it and immediately rolled to the ground, chewing on it with his belly up.

"Oh. My. Goddess! This is so amazing," he said and kept rolling in delight, left and right until he swallowed and took another big bite.

As Louie was enjoying his new gift, a notification icon flashed and I quickly brought it up.

You have successfully completed "Man's Best Friend VI". You have been awarded 800,000 XP and Berner Würstel of Soul Entanglement.

800,000 XP? That is fucking crazy.

Up until level 19, I'd earned around 550,000 experience points and that had taken me a lot of hours training with Leo in the extra-dimensional hunting ground of his clan. Even if the experience reward was split between Louie and me, it would be more than enough to reach level 20 and gain access to D-grade equipment, which also meant I could now enchant weapons to at least +3, the safe threshold.

There was another flashing icon in my periphery, which was probably the level-up notification, but chose to ignore it as the orb, or what remained of it, rolled toward me. I picked it up and without even trying to examine it, got a prompt.

Item: Orb of Companionship

Type: Consumable - Potion

Durability: 800000/800000

Grade: A Grade

Weight: 1st.

Description: This orb is an integral part of the soul-entanglement ritual. If, for whatever reason, your soul-entangled animal companion becomes incapacitated, both their body and soul will be stored in this orb. While in the stasis of the orb, the body will be stabilized and gradually healed to perfect health while the soul will remain in a near deep-sleep state. The soul will occupy the body again and can be released from the orb once more, whenever the owner wills it.

This was an amazing item. I'd never let anything bad happen to Louie, of course, but at least now I wouldn't have to worry about it again. Though this made me wonder. I'd done this whole quest just so I could have Louie live forever, or at least as long as I was around, but nothing in the item description mentioned anything about how he would age.

A rapidly flashing notification brought me out of my thoughts.

You have acquired an item that can be soul-bound.

Do you wish to bind the Orb of Companionship to your soul?

Yes No

Without even thinking about it, I selected "Yes" and I felt a small needle-like pinch on the left side of my chest. I took a quick glance underneath my armor and could barely see a circular tattoo that had now appeared there.

You have bound the Orb of Companionship to your soul.

The Orb of Companionship is stored in a special personal extra-dimensional pocket and nobody can ever take it from you. If you ever misplace the Orb of Companionship, Dark Energy will lead you straight to it, no matter the distance.

This was seriously reassuring. Not even the goddess that gifted me with it would be able to snatch it from my inventory as she had done with the quest items. Still though, this didn't answer my question about Louie growing older.

"Oooooh myyyy goddess," Louie continued moaning in satisfaction, as he finished the last piece of his bacon-sausage.

As soon as he gulped down his last bite, an intense blue glow surrounded us both, pulling us together. I didn't resist the urge to move closer to Louie and neither did he. Instead, I wrapped my arms around him and was flooded with a sense of extreme elation. I felt whole in a way I'd never felt before. I wasn't alone and somehow, I could feel glimpses of what Louie was feeling.

Your soul has been eternally entangled with the soul of your animal companion, Louie Thunder.

The health and physical condition of your animal companion will mirror your own. Though the animal companion will not sicken when you are ill, their soul will be released if you die.

Soul entanglement enables communication on a deeper level. You are now able to telepathically communicate with your animal companion.

"Wow, did you read that, Alex?" Louie's voice echoed in my head, though he wasn't even moving his mouth. "I can talk in your head now. Can you hear me? Can you reply if you can hear me? I want to know if I can hear you too."

"Ah, yes I can," I attempted to reply, trying to think of sending this single thought to Louie, a bit overwhelmed with his voice taking its place in my brain. If it's difficult to
