Chapter 1: God's ForgivenessGod is so merciful and compassionate and He forgives so thoroughly that in Micah 7:18-19 it says that He casts our sins into the deep parts of the sea. Even in our modern era and even with the most advanced technology the deepest parts of the sea are still not accessible to man. So this analogy of our sins being cast into the depths of the sea is demonstrating the fact that God no longer accesses our sins to use against us. And He completely forgives us of them – when we ask Him to.
Micah 7:18-19 (KJV). 18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of His Heritage? He retaineth not His anger for ever, because He delighteth in mercy. 19 He will turn again, He will have compassion upon us; He will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
Notice also verse 18 which says that God delights in mercy.
Also in Psalm 103:12 God further emphasizes that our sins are taken from us to the extent that the east is from the west. Since the east never meets up with the west this is saying the distance is infinite. So God forgives so completely that our sins are removed from us to an infinite distance.
Psalm 103:12 (KJV). As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us.
From these two scriptures alone we already see God's extreme emphasis on forgiveness. It's God's very nature and delight to show mercy and forgiveness.
And this forgiveness that God gives to us is so extremely and infinitely costly that it took Jesus to suffer horribly at the hands of men and to suffer death on the cross to pay for our sins. It also involved the spiritual weight of the sin and the forsaking of the Father towards His eternally beloved Son to pay for our sins. The punishment that we fully deserved was instead placed on Jesus so that we would not have to pay for our sins in Hell forever.
The extreme and eternal love and compassion that God the Father and Jesus demonstrated to forgive our sins was infinite in extent and depth. Our sin debt to God was indeed infinite and extreme.
I wanted to emphasize this extreme mercy on God’s part to us to emphasize the wickedness of behavior shown when we refuse to forgive another for a sin or sins they have done to us.
God expects that we show mercy to others just like He has shown to us. When you don’t, then this reveals a very wicked and evil heart. And God sees this as a very great evil – punishable by being cast into Hell itself. This He reveals in Matthew 6:14-15, as well as in Matthew 18:21-35 and in many other scriptures.
As well as the Word of God in the Bible, (as you will see later in this book) God has also given several people revelations of people that were cast into Hell and nearly cast into Hell because of a lack of forgiveness. The Word of God alone is enough to get this truth across to us but God also has supplied divine revelations of Hell to re-emphasize this extremely vital truth.
Chapter 2: Forgive Or Go To Hell?
Jesus said your sins would not be forgiven if you don’t forgive others. And if your sins are not forgiven your destination is Hell.
In Matthew 6:14-15 Jesus said: “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6:14-15
Jesus is so clear here. If you do not forgive others then you lose your own salvation. Jesus’ statement in Mat 6:14-15 is so very clear that it is a wonder how anybody can twist it to mean anything else.
In Colossians 1:13-14 the Holy Spirit through Paul said: “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
This means that you have redemption or salvation only if your sins are forgiven. And if you refuse to forgive others then God Himself says that your sins are not forgiven and so you don’t have redemption.
Another statement from God that our salvation is directly dependent on us forgiving others. Of course to be saved in the first place we must have already received Jesus as our Lord. And to receive Jesus as Lord means that He really is your Lord – your Boss, your King, your Master - the One you are willingly obedient to. The One you love and obey. And part of that obedience is obedience on Jesus’ command to forgive others – especially when Jesus Himself clearly states that your own forgiveness is directly dependent on you forgiving others.
How God Views Unforgiveness
To understand how God sees unforgiveness Jesus gave us the passage in Matthew 18:21-35 (NASB) which reads as follows:
21 Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.
23 “For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. 24 “When he had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. 25 “But since he did not have the means to repay, his lord commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made. 26 “So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.’ 27 “And the lord of that slave felt compassion and released him and forgave him the debt.
28 “But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ 29 “So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you.’ 30 “But he was unwilling and went and threw him in prison until he should pay back what was owed.
31 “So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their lord all that had happened. 32 “Then summoning him, his lord said to him, ‘You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 ‘Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?’ 34 “And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him. 35 “My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart.”
Footnotes to Mat 18:21-35 :
18:24 A talent (original greek) was a monetary unit worth about twenty years’ wages for a laborer. Median U.S.A. wage (year 2011) = $25 thousand / yr = $1/2 million / 20 years = 1 talent. This implies that 10000 talents = $5 Billion.
What this means is that the 10000 talents that the first servant owed his master was equivalent to $5,000,000,000 dollars = $5 Billion Dollars (in 2011 US Dollars).
18:28 100 denarii (original greek). A denarius was equivalent to a laborer’s full day’s wage. Median U.S.A. wage (year 2011) = $25 thousand / yr = $70/day. This implies that 100 denarii = 100 days = $7 Thousand.
What this means is that the 100 denari that the second servant (servant of the first servant) owed his master was 7000 dollars.
The following are the specific points that Jesus is teaching us:
Our Sins Are Great Against God. So great that you could never pay for them yourself. In fact the analogy that Jesus made of ten thousand talents that the wicked servant owed his master was $5 Billion dollars. No one with a typical wage could ever pay back this much – not even in a thousand lifetimes.
God Freely Forgives Our Sins. If we ask Him to, by repenting and confessing that we have sinned against Him and asking His forgiveness, and receiving Jesus as our Lord. Only the blood of Jesus can cleanse us from the penalty and stain of our sin.
The Trespasses Against Us Are Comparatively Small, Even tiny compared to our sins against God. Jesus makes the analogy of a brother transgressing against us as owing $7000 dollars. It was of some significance but a working laborer could reasonably earn enough to pay back this amount. We may amplify a sin against us as a large debt but compared to what each of us owes God (a $5 billion dollar debt) it is nothing in comparison. Of course our debt of sin against God is actually infinite. But the analogy Jesus is making is that the sin that someone commits against us is as nothing in comparison to the sin that we have made against God. If you do the math the numbers show that we owe God ($5 billion) and this is about a million times worse than what ever sin someone made against us ($7 thousand).
We Should Therefore Most Freely Forgive Others. Because God had extremely generous compassion on you – you should have compassion on someone who sins against you.
We Should Forgive Others Or God Will Not Forgive You. “If you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6:15. That if we do not, God views us as evil, and
