The Cottage

In America, one of the most important parts of history in the world, in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts. People where hung, where burnt alive at the stake, or more if they were accused of being a witch or doing witch craft. It actually started in Europe and made its way into America. What people don't tell you is the story of two young adults, a brother and a sister, who were two guards a cottage from evil spirits and the witches.

The cottage itself sat next to a cemetery. It was always gloomy and foggy. It was a spooky and weary place to be especially at night. Spirits roamed around, some good, some bad, others who just wanted to walk around before they went back to their dark, coffin to sleep.

An almost twenty-year-old girl with dark brown hair and dark brown eyes to match was crying into a tall twenty-year-old, brown hair man's chest. She stood about up to the man's shoulders. She hugged onto him.

The man just let her cry as he stroke her head. "Itโ€™s okay, Amillet," he reassured her.

"It's not okay," Amillet replied. "We're together at last and now they want to take me from you, Christian."

"It's going to be alright. I'll come and visit and I'm sure you can come and visit me too. Besides I trust that your brother won't let anything happen to you."

Amillet shook her head and looked down at the dirt which she stood on. "Why me? I'm not a guardian and why did they choose me? A woman?"

Christian smiled. "Don't worry about it. We will be back together again and I think that they picked the right two. You and William make a good team."

They heard someone clear their voice. They looked over to see a man with somewhat long dark brown hair, like Amillet's, and black eyes walking over to them in the moonlight. "What are you two love birds doing?" he asked, smiling.

Amillet closed her eyes, tears falling down her cheek.

"Come on, Amillet. We have to go," the man said. He was about nineteen-years-old.

Amillet sighed at her brother's words. "Yes, William. Just one more moment, please?"

"Okay. But hurry up. The ghosts are probably getting restless and we must make sure they don't get out of the cemetery."

Amillet nodded. She looked up into Christian's eyes. "I will meet you here every night until...."  She broke down into tears.  "One of us is gone."

"And I'll hold you up on that deal," Christian replied. "I love you, Amillet. Now go and I'll meet you here tomorrow night."

Amillet nodded and walked over to her brother, looking back at Christian then to the road ahead of her.

William had looked around at the railings which surrounded the cemetery. He could see that none of the spirits were walking around. He was hoping that they were still in their graves. As him and his sister made their way to the little, old, wooden cottage he let her walk a head of him. He looked around to memorize the sight.  He looked over and noticed a ghostly man, with dreary eyes staring at them. The man looked kind of pale and kind of if he weren't there.

"Excuse me, sir. Can I help you with something?" William asked the man, stopping in his tracks.

Amillet stopped when she heard her brother speak. She turned to look at him then in the direction of the man who he was talking to, but she didn't see anyone or anything. She didn't want to ask and just closed her eyes for a minute or so she thought.

            "AMILLET, LOOK OUT!"

Amillet opened her eyes when she felt some one push her. She looked over to see William fighting a ghostly man. He had found a sword somewhere. She looked around, but there were no other spirits around. She was freaked out.

"RUN INTO THE COTTAGE, AMILLET, AND LOOK FOR WEAPONS!" William called as he fought with the ghost.

Amillet did as her brother had said. The weapons in the house were made to fight off the different spirits. It wasn't going to be easy, but it was effective. She looked for something in the house when she noticed a rope and a sword. She picked up the sword and decided to leave the rope.

She ran out to help fight with her brother. When she was outside, she looked over and noticed that William was holding himself up on the ground and that the ghost he was fighting was gone.

William was breathing heavy. He looked up at the porch and seen his sister standing there. He kind of smiled as he pushed himself back. "Come here, Amillet," he motioned to her.

Amillet dropped her sword and ran over to her dear brother. She cried as she hugged him. "We're going to die here. I just know it."

"Hey, don't worry about it. I'm okay."

Amillet looked up at her brother, kind of mad and smacked him.

They heard a ghostly laugh. They looked over at a tree and the ghost who was fighting William was cracking up. "You put up a good fight, kid," the ghost said. "I can see that the living had sent me someone I can train with."

They noticed that the man was wearing a uniform and that he was once a soldier when he was a live. "I'm General Bowergaurd. It's pronounce Bow-er-gaurd, just like it's spelled. Now I'm one of the good spirits and I'm here to help the two of you, but I will have to admit that you can't trust all of us. There are those you need to watch out for. Good spirits can walk freely in and out of that cottage whether the door is open or not where as the evil spirits can only enter if the door is open. Young lady, you should go back and close that door before you have an evil spirit walking in there. They are set to kill anyone and anything."

Amillet nodded and ran over to the cottage and closed the door.

"You two have a lot of spirits to worry about here. A few of the little well young ones like to pull pranks on people. Little harmless pranks, but some of them you have to watch closely it doesn't matter how old or young they are. I will be here to help you learn which ones you can trust and which ones you can't. You two understand?"

"Um....Yes sir," Amillet answered.

"We understand. Um.... Question.... Can we get something to eat around here?"

Bowergaurd smiled and nodded. "Yes, believe it or not the living has food in there for the both of you. Now before you go to eat, what are your names?"

William stood up and held out his hand. "I am William Trescott and this is my eldest sister, Amillet."                Bowergaurd smiled at the names. "It is a pleasure to meet the both of you. Now if you excuse me, I have to get ready for another fight."

Amillet and William watched as the ghost bowed and slowly started to vanish.

Can't Leave

Amillet awoke to a high pitch scream. She noticed that William wasn't in the dark room. She stood up and walked around, opening doors to other rooms, but no sight of her brother. She walked outside and realized that the sun was just starting to rise and that William was sitting on the edge of the porch. She walked over to him and kind of pulled up her dress to sit next to him.

"I was talking to Bowergaurd this morning," William said as he looked around. "He said that the ghost don't walk during the day. They only arrive at night so we can sleep then and wake up about sunset."                 Amillet looked at her brother and then to the graves. "Why is that?"

"Because they are free at night to roam whereas during the day the...."

They heard a woman screaming. When they looked out into the town the noticed men dragging a woman out of her home and over to a little stage which had a cross placed on it. They weren't close enough to see what was going on, but they knew.

Amillet ran to the opening of the cemetery. Tears filled her eyes. "They have Lisa," she told William.

William felt his heart drop as she said the name. Lisa was his love and now she was going to have to suffer. "No.... They have her on trial?"

Amillet looked over at the little stage and noticed how they had tied her to the cross. "It's too late. They think that she's a witch and now they're...."

Smoke started coming from the town and the town people had backed away to watch the woman burn to death.

"She's burning...." Amillet couldn't watch anymore. She turned away from the horrible sight. Her best friend, her brother's soon to be wife, was gone.

William dropped to his knees as he seen the smoke. He couldn't believe that the woman he loved was gone, all because the town declared her to be a witch. He knew her well enough to know that it wasn't true, but now it was too late.

Amillet looked at her brother and knew that he was heartbroken. "William, I am so sorry. I didn't think that they would do that."

"No she can't be gone, she has to...." William stood up and turned the cottage and went inside. He didn't want to see the sight.

Amillet ran inside to try and help her brother. She knew that he was angry with the town for what they did but she needed to talk to him.

Later that day, William sat in a chair, thinking about Lisa. He wanted to know if that was the reason why the town chose him for this job so they could kill his future wife.

Amillet walked inside with some meat, bread, and water. She knew that her brother must have been hungry. She lightly kicked the door close and carried the food to her brother. "Here. You need to eat. Lisa...."

"Lisa.... Why would they burn her assuming that she does witch craft? Why would they do that knowing that we were engaged to be married?"

Amillet didn't say anything. She didn't know what to say to her brother that would make him feel better.
